Thailand recognises Palestinian state: Abbas

RAMALLAH, January 19, 2012 (AFP) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Thursday thanked Thailand for recognising a Palestinian state, according to a statement carried by the WAFA news agency.

"President Mahmud Abbas thanks Thailand's king and government for its official recognition of the Palestinian state," it said.

The statement said that the move was announced by Thailand's mission to the United Nations in New York, and said "official procedures have began on the establishment of diplomatic relations."

The office of Palestinian foreign minister Riad al-Malki confirmed the Thai announcement, saying it brought to 131 the number of countries who recognise a Palestinian state within the lines that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War.

The Palestinians have sought to boost their international standing and support as negotiations with Israel remain stalled over the issue of settlement construction.

In 2011, they won recognition from a slew of countries, as well as membership at the UN cultural agency, UNESCO.

They also presented a bid to join the United Nations as a full member, over opposition from Washington and Israel, a request that is still being considered by the international body.

LMAO!

There must be so many right now, falling off the soap boxes, packing bags and jumping on the outrage bus to depart these shores. How can 'they' possibly live in a nation that recognises Palestine!.

Well done the Thai politicians, something good and statesmanly like for once. I guess Peanut butter and Israeli Strawberries will be missing from the shelves in Central sometime soon, maybe a drop in the huge numbers of Israeli and US tourists out here???? Maybe not.

Hardly.

The Majority of UN member states recognize Palestine as a state. Among those are India, China, Russia and the Czech Republic, to name a few. Israel got solid economic and tourism relationship with them. Doubt most US citizens even consider this at all as relevant.

While true that most Israelis are hawkish about a Palestinian state, there's probably about 30%-40% who will support or go along with it if it brings about peace (well 40% on a good day, maybe).

Thought those strawberries are from China....

That's good news. Another nail in the coffin of the USA / Israel alliance.

No nail in the coffin as such, a covert war is being fought right now. With Iran nuclear scientist's being killed, Iranian arms sites being being blown up etc. The US moving it's 5th fleet into the Hormuz straights! All out war is on the cards if Mossad/CIA/MI6 Get their way.

Sad but true........I really don't know what these folks are thinking.

Is war the only jobs the administration can provide?

At times I think so.
