Thai Wife Coming To Laos For A Day Or 2 With Me

Featured Replies

Does she need a passport or can she go with her ID card? I have had mixed replies about this so far.

Cheers

Using the Thai ID card to get a Border Pass at Nong Khai is fine, but does take a bit of time, altho not all that much.

Using a Thai passport is just faster and less hassle on both sides. And, no visa required so the wife has to wait for you while you get your Visa On Arrival on the Lao side.

That's what we do, and heading up to Vientiane tomorrow morning.

correct,

She can enter Lao and go to Vientiene with you on an ID card, but no further than that.

I've done it with my wife and it's no harder than her entering with a passport

Thank you, will be leaving early monday morning to get my visa, never been before, is it pretty easy to find the place I have to go to in order to get an non immigrant o visa?

Just grab a taxi at the border, but don't pay any more than 100 baht to the Embassy. They will tell you its very far and expensive. I've done it 3 times now and have only paid 100baht each time. There is a nice hotel across the road for around 700/night as well. Walk around a bit to find cheap food. The place right across the road is expensive.

It depends on where you're going to in Laos. Vientiane or Sawhannnakjet????jap.gif

Pretty sure it's clear he's going to the closest Thai embassy which is in Vientiane.

I'd like to add, I just returned from Lao with GF spending 4 weeks traveling to Vientiane & North part of country, Luang Prabang, etc. she used passport, and we both enjoyed trip greatly. A few looks by locals due to Lao laws I think, and general curiosity. A border pass is sufficient from Udon/Nong khai province to Vientiane though.

She doesn't need her passport, but she is better advised to use it.
