Thailand will host a "Thai Night" extravaganza at next week's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra leading a delegation of about 20 officials and business leaders to the premier global business event.

The highlight of the Thai Night will be a fashion show on January 27. The premier and her delegates will arrive after an official visit to India.

Thailand is due to play host at this year's World Economic Forum Asia/Pacific due to take place from May 31-June 1. High-level involvement at Davos is designed to boost the country's image and attract participants to the Bangkok forum, officials said.

In Davos, Yingluck will deliver the opening remarks in a session on "Women as the Way Forward". Others taking part in the session will include Michelle Bachelet, under-secretary-general at the United Nations; Sheryl Sanberg, CEO of Facebook Inc; Archbishop Desmond Tutu from South Africa; and Talal al-Zain, CEO of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding.

Deputy Prime Minister Kittirat Na-Ranong will speak in a session on "Tough Choices in a Time of Crisis" - with Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan Alliance; Yukio Edano Yukio, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry; and Brian Duperreault, CEO of Marsh & McLennan Co.

Other Thai delegates include Bangkok Bank President Chartsiri Sophonpanich, PTT CEO Pailin Chuchottaworn, Thai Airways International president Piyasvasti Amranand, Thai Bev CEO Thapana Sirivadhanabakdi.

The Nation will be represented by Pana Janviroj in his capacity as executive editor of the Asia News Network. He will be joined by the editors of The Statesman, India and China Daily Asia-Pacific.

All eyes will be on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who will deliver the opening address at the WEF on the ongoing Euro crisis.

Organisers say more than 2,600 people will participate in this year's event, a record number. Close to 40 heads of state or government will take part, with over 1,600 business leaders from the Forum's 1,000 member companies, plus social entrepreneurs, young global leaders and representatives from civil society, media, academia and the arts.

This year's theme is "The Great Transformation: Shaping New Models", which reflects the need for a profound overhaul in the face of a fraying global financial system and lingering economic malaise.

"Capitalism, in its current form, no longer fits the world around us. We have failed to learn the lessons from the financial crisis of 2009. A global transformation is urgently needed and it must start with reinstating a global sense of social responsibility," said Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum.

The four sub-themes of the event reflect the interconnected nature of the changes Schwab says are needed: Growth and employment models; Leadership and innovation models; Sustainability and resource models; Social and technological models.

The Forum will welcome close to 40 heads of state or government, including leaders from Azerbaijan, Canada, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Guinea, Haiti, Ireland, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, South Sudan, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Other public figures who will attend include US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, chief executive of Hong Kong SAR Donald Tsang, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde, World Bank president Robert B Zoellick, secretary-general of the League of Arab States Nabil Elaraby and Egypt's presidential candidates Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh and Amr Moussa.

PM to regain confidence for Thailand at WEF

BANGKOK, 23 January 2012 (NNT) – Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra plans to take advantage of her presence at the upcoming World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland to bring back foreign confidence in Thailand.

During the forum, the Thai Prime Minister will provide the global community with reassurance that Thailand’s economy is already recovering from the flood crisis.

She will also insist that the Thai private sector is still strong and will continue to be a driving force in the global market.

The Prime Minister will also give interviews to the foreign press, such as CNBC, Euronews and The Financial Times, to create confidence in Thailand’s politics, economy and water management measures for the future.

If they really want to instill confidence in Thailand, they should consider sending someone other than Yingluck for the interiviews.

The notion of her improving confidence is as about as funny as her pilot's uniform with the unearned wings insignia.

For those unsure of her interview abilities...

You be the judge. Here's her interview with Australian news:

Video News - ABC News interview

Holy Crap! You've gotta be joking! This is who they're putting forward as the next "leader"?!! And she's actually leading in certain polls? Wow... absolutely incredible.

This gal reminds me of some of my hired New Years help. Her lips move but I can't hear what she's saying.

May Buddha help Thailand.

As the chosen Number 1 position holder on Pheu Thai Party's Party-list of MP's, one can presume the consensus within the Party is that she is the most capable person in their Party to lead this nation.

The cream of the crop, the best of the best, as it were.

you need to fix your link

Thanks for that, wxyz.

I hadn't realized that ABC had ended its publication of this video news.

It's a good thing someone's foresight put it onto YouTube as it's destined for classic status.

Even now, it's pre-election time frame discussion was prophetic of what was to come.

her english is bad, is that the joke?

I find it odd that expats who are not fluent in Thai would criticize the PM for her English language skills.

She has not relocated to a foreign country and refused to learn the native language has she?

How could she be expected to learn English? She went to Eastern Kentucky University - they don't speak English in Kentucky - they speak Su'thern. Youall wa sum friiiiied with that?

"The highlight of the Thai Night will be a fashion show on January 27"

And what will be the highlight of the fashsion show ? The latest designer collection of burberry boots...?

Why is Thailand being singled out for ridicule? The Thai event is promoting Thai fashion designers and artists. What's wrong with that?

Check out some of the other delegations events. The Davos summit is used as an opportunity to promote participating countries' interests. Part of the effort from Thailand is to highlight an industry that often gets overlooked. In case anyone forgot, Thailand has an important garment manufacturing sector that provides jobs and contributes to the GDP.

Have a look at what Japan is planning, a food event;

January 27 Japan Night in Davos Venue: Central Sporthotel, Davos, Switzerland

On January 27, JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) will hold a Japan Night at the venue, on the initiative of the Japanese Government, providing participants the opportunity to find out more about Japan, its traditional foods, culinary culture and other tourist attractions.

How about Korea night?

Oh look more food.......

The USA relies on private companies and foundations to do its big shows.

China sponsors a night as well.

Ok, so why the ridicule when the PM is showing support for a trade initiative and an event that attempts to promote the image of Thailand. Isn't that part of her job?

Thais that have never been to a USA university can speak better.

Yingluck’s English language interview

Yingluck Shinawatra discusses her background and qualifications for the prime ministerial job, the role of Thaksin and what she would do if she gets the job.

Yingluck Shinawatra was the youngest of nine children of the family Mr. and Mrs. Yindee Lert Shinawatra (daughter of Princess Jantip (Na Chiangmai) Raminkwong). Like his brother is Thaksin Shinawatra , she is fourth generation in a family of original Thai Hoa (her grandfather was the original American married to a Thai woman in Thai) which had moved to their current Shinawatra in 1938 political reasons. She has a bachelor's degree at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration under the Chiang Mai University in 1988 and then a master's degree in Public Administration of the University of Kentucky , the United States in 1991. She was married but not legally registered, Anusorn Amornchat her husband, CEO of M Link Asia Corporation PCL Group is owned by her sister. Her sister Yaowapa Wongsawat, wife of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat .

When was she in the service? What did she do to get the ribbons? Or is she just making a fashion statement?

The weather forecast for Davos calls for snow over the next week.

Perhaps we will be lucky and see photographs of P.M. Yingluck and some of her entourage on the slippery slopes while relaxing from the exhausting meetings.

I am sure there will be plenty of fashion photo ops promoting Thailand's fashion industry, especially in Chiang Mai ski wear.

And finally I am sure Khun Yingluck already has her new Burberry accessories for her apres ski wear.

I hope she has a great time and doesn't get too piste off with the cold.

As a preview with a look at the rapidly-fading and much hyped supposed good looks, comes a very recent shot.

You need to ease away from the buffet table there a little sooner, eh Yingluck? Although the chubbier face smooths out the crow's feet, the new double chin is unflattering.

Geez guys give the lady a break - neither academic or foreign language proficiency, nor even high intelligence itself have much to do with leadership skills.

History's been pretty kind to Ronnie Reagan and no one claimed he was qualified in the ways you're talking about. Is she less qualified than the last Bush, not exactly a paragon of fluency in his native Texan.

It's the competence of the machine behind you, not the figurehead itself. . .

Chinnicha faces losing House seat for false asset statement

The National Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday decided to seek the judicial review to back up its ruling to disqualify Pheu Thai MP Chinnicha Wongsawat from Chiang Mai, a niece of ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The NACC ruled that Chinnicha had falsified her asset statement, an offence punishable by removing from House seat and banning from holding political office for five years.

Under the anti-graft law, the NACC ruling will be forwarded to the Constitution Court for mandatory review.
