Anyone recommend some preferably free software that would convert/compress standard DVD movies down to use on a mobile device PDA/smartphone etc.?

'Any Video Converter' is the one I use. Perfect. Done all Dad's Army!

format factory seems to be working real nice - works with batch files too. I made a load of mp4 in moble format in minutes. It seems to make anything video or audio as well as combining files load of stuff. I have been getting along fine with the free version.

I use that too. Easy to get from Isohunt ;)

ive got handbrake, but use freemake ... easiest one out there imo... hamster is another, but last I checked hamster was devoid of options.
