Police In Pai - Good Job, Guys!

I'm getting around to this really late, but I really owe these guys a big "thank you".

I've lived here in Pai district of Maehongson province for several years now, during which there have been some issues in the media regarding local authorities.

I don't know everything that's happened in the past, but I have to say, I now find myself most impressed with their recent performance on my behalf.

Back around October of last year (2011), a gang of thieves broke into my house while my wife and child were asleep in the back bedroom. When my wife woke in the night to pee, she noticed my laptop was missing. They had taken my computer, along with several other items. The neighboring guesthouses had also been gone over, the thieves swapping shoes at each stop.

When the Investigative Unit showed up to take the report, I was immediately impressed with the professional manner and approach of the Head of the Unit. He seemed genuinely concerned, and compassionate about the theft, as the computer had a lot of personal photos, as well as the fact that I needed it for work. A friend had had a similar incident several years ago, and was less impressed. I think the difference is probably that there is a new Head of the Investigative Unit.

Anyway, a few days later I got a call. My computer had been recovered! I had given it up for lost, as I pretty much would anywhere in the world. They had not only recovered the machine, but they also had three suspects under arrest. They had tried to sell it to someone who purchases used items. My confidence in the professionalism of the investigative unit was renewed again at their response when my wife asked if it was okay to strike one of the suspects: "no m'ame, it's a police matter now"!

Well it might not be the most interesting thing for everyone to read about Thai police doing a great job - wonder if anyone will even read the post?

Thanks Pai Police!!

Kudo's to the BIB and also for you taking the time to post a bit of good news.. I do like your wife's approach also.

Never think twice before spreading good news about anything

Thanks for taking the time to bring a little positive news, and welcome to the forum.

Good story. It's nice to read something good for a change. Because, just last week.................. Only joking. giggle.gif

Not sure they enforce about drugs as well...

Boggles the mind.

We have a guesthouse in Pai and occasionally we need to confer with the Tourist Police. I echo the OP's sentiments. They are professional, courteous and are genuinely concerned to resolve issues which tourists may have. Given the previous, and deserved, poor reputation which dogged the police in Pai, this new attitude is very welcome.

Well done re posting this......it's a change to see a positive review of the police.

Nice story, Toothpick, and thanks for sharing. There are certainly good cops out there, but the bad get most of the press.

Awww that story brightened up my day! :) Thanks for taking time to share with us!

Glad to know they have a decent cop up there now - the last one used to murder tourists and his wife.
