A friend of my wife (single mum with two children, no official job - not even bar work) has a family sponsor in Europe to guarantee her (the friend) for a trip to Europe and has asked my wife if our company can provide a letter claiming that we employ the friend (giving her another "reason" to return to Thailand and help the visa process).

The question I have is... what would our company be laying itself open to by falsly writing such a letter to be presented during a (Danish I think) visit visa application? I'm not comfortable with the idea.

I think you are right to be concerned about this, to write such letter would be fraud.

If she is using it to travel to the UK and is found out her application will be refused and she will be barred for ten years, not sure on other countries.

Years ago I had a young Thai female engineer who was working for us and she wanted to go on holiday to Europe (think it was Holland) and she asked me for a letter etc, which I did for her providing my contact details.

My natural asumption was the embassy concerned would just just look at it and tick a box on a form, but believe it or not I actually did get a phone call from the Embassy concerned wanting confirmation of the salary she had stated, she was in stable employment in Thailand, I was her boss etc

So based on that experience I would say embassies can and do check details on occasion, and if you provide a letter and someone does phone up and some body picking the phone says the person concerned doesnt work there, then things could go pear shaped

I wouldn't consider writting such a letter, as Basil B indicates you would be leaving yourself open to criminal charges if the deception was discovered, and they often are, though how seriously the Thai Police would take it I don't know. As well as a covering letter the ECO might ask for evidence of employment, pay slips, tax paid and the like, I really wouldn't get involved.

Again, as has been pointed out, if the fraud was discovered, and they they often are, the applicant could be banned from making a further application for a period of time, for the UK it would be 10 years, I assume Denmark would have similar rules.

Many thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated. Just confirming the obvious to me I guess. "No letter" it is, and I can sleep at night, and maybe actually do my wife's friend a favor in the long run.

My advise is we had a client who presented a letter of employment the embassy called the restaurant & no one knew her the asked :

  • How many rooms do you have.
  • How many tables do you have outside.
  • What are the opening times.
  • Does the boss have a wife what's her name

They then called her she could not answer anything she ended up with a paragraph 320 7 A. All our clients sign a document which clearly states all our applications are based on the documents supplied by the applicant. We take no responsibility for any false documents or statements made by the applicant or the sponsor.

Surely if it was found out, the OP would be in the sh*t, plus his name and that of his wife's would be on record, could this affect applications by his wife in the future?

I realise the OP is not going to do the letter now.

Agree, even though the OP is not Danish this could affect him in the future particularly if embassies are sharing intelligence on dodgy companies selling references, it could affect his present and future employees as well.

Also the reference could also be used in other ways of which the OP would not be aware like securing a loan.

Good decision

Shuold you cmpromise your integrity for ever (or as long as shaed databases) of course not.

A final nail is she would also have something on you that could be used as blackmail in future.

Yep, that's what we said to her and she agrees completely, so no problems. I think generally the culture here doesn't fully contemplate the implications of doing something "not correct", as a population is guided and influenced by their upstanding government and officials ;-)

If he did the letter and the embassy found out it wasn't legit, I doubt there would be any repercussions to the company. The embassy is not likely to take legal action, and even if they did, it's pretty easy to say that the letter is fake.

The worst that is likely to happen is that the company gets put on some list that tells the embassy to bin any visa application where the company is mentioned.
