Buying Orchids

Featured Replies

Want to buy a good few Orchids but i find the market behind Tesco /Lotus ( Kamid ?) quite expensive .Any cheaper places to buy Orchids around Chiang Mai ?

Kamtieng market (the one you mentioned) has well priced orchids, just need to look around, as cheap as some of the smaller outlets around town.

Agreed. Just look around the market. I've probably bought 50 orchids there and am well aware of pricing. Some sellers will negotiate also.

Or go to Lampang and get orchids that have been freshly removed from the forsest. Limited choice though; the farmed ones tend to be prettier. Then again there is some enjoyment in raping a forest.

Kamtieng have regular Orchids ,3 for B100 which is cheap .If you want anything with big spectacular flowers you pay B200 to B1,0000 each i have found .

You can buy wild orchids all over. The hill tribe people sell them everywhere and they are very cheap (like 15 Baht each). But they are much different than the farmed ones. It really depends what you are looking for.

Depends what kind of orchids you are looking for. A lot of the dendrobiums are taken from the forest (not good) and can be very expensive when in flower. There are many cheaper ones in the market, normally the smaller flowers and mostly cultivated.

Cattleyas are not too expensive and there's a man selling some at the back of Warorot Market - his are not expensive and mostly bigger plants.

Seems a lot also have medicinal properties so maybe better to get going with some cultivation before the Chinese ingest the whole lot!
