Hi all

Hopefully someone can shed some light on my situation.When I met my TGF her ID card had her name spelt the way the local Amphur told her it was spelled and because she never imagined it being an issue she didn't change it. She went to the passport office last week after being told by her local Amphur that she needed to get the passport first then they would issue a new ID card for her with the same name on it.

So she goes to the office tells them all this yet when they put in all her details they tell her that for her name to go in English on her passport they would have to drop the first letter from her name. She agreed as she assumed they knew what they were talking about.So she gets her passport in the post today and sends me a copy.

I ask her to go get her dads ID card because I don't think the name looks correct. Aghhhhhhhhhhh not only does her dad have the the first letter they dropped from her passport he also has a different last letter on his ID.

She was really upset and I have no clue what effect if any this has on future visa application. She has to go get her new ID card next week and has no idea what spelling they should put on it.

Another problem for us in all this is that all the Skype calls and chat logs I have snapshots of have her name the way she spells it not the way the passport or her card spell it.

Is this going to screw us up ???

The difference is basically like spelling her name Smith instead of Smyth so officials should know she is the same person in our logs but with the way things are I do not want any unnecessary complications. She got her daughters passport the same day with the same spelling as her.

Please anyone have any suggestions or advice? She is worried sick.

translation is based on what the actor who writes it down hears and then translated in thai.

be sure that follow-up registrations are based on a existing registered thai translation.(the first one)

Actually, there are specific rules laid down by government depts as to how names must be transliterated. The government depts are applying these rules. The situation is slowly becoming standardised.

This is my point. The amphur said passport will change then they will match the passport spelling but they seemed very unsure. As I said already her card, her passport and her dads card are now all different.

Who is right who is wrong ?

if they not follow the first official "to thai" translation on your first official translated document then you could get into trouble

example.

a child is born........thai mother thai certificate.......then the name (your name) must be translated back into english.....

you can get wind up with several diverent names(in your language or /and english) which eventualy can cause trouble OUTSIDE Thailand were a more confirmed standerds of registration is followed.

So do you think that as long as the amphur put the same name on her new card as she has on her passport

Things should be ok.
