Trump-Xi summit: plenty of pomp but the big fights remain

THE BIG HANDSHAKE

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping wrapped up their Washington summit with plenty of ceremony, warm words and promises of cooperation — but few concrete breakthroughs on the biggest disputes between the world's two economic superpowers.

The two leaders extended their trade truce for another two months, giving negotiators more time to work on tariffs and other economic disputes. But the major arguments over Taiwan, artificial intelligence and China's relationship with Iran remain unresolved.

TRADE: TRUCE, NOT PEACE

The trade agreement was extended rather than replaced with a permanent settlement.

That keeps the latest US-China trade war from flaring up again immediately, but pushes the difficult questions further down the road — including tariffs, Chinese purchases of American goods, rare-earth supplies and technology restrictions.

For Beijing, keeping the trade relationship stable is valuable. China has continued to maintain strong exports despite American efforts to restrict its access to technology and markets.

TAIWAN: STILL THE RED LINE

Taiwan remains one of the most dangerous fault lines.

Xi pressed Trump to oppose Taiwanese independence, according to China's official account of their private discussions. Washington has deliberately maintained ambiguity over Taiwan's ultimate status while providing the island with weapons for self-defence.

There was no public breakthrough on the issue — leaving one of the biggest US-China disagreements exactly where it was.

AI: FRIENDS OR RIVALS?

Artificial intelligence offered another opportunity for cooperation, but also exposed the technological competition between the two countries.

Xi called for responsible development and greater cooperation, while Trump has taken a much more relaxed public position on AI regulation.

Both countries know that whoever leads in advanced AI could gain a major economic and strategic advantage. The summit produced discussion, but no major new agreement.

TEHRAN IN THE ROOM

Iran was another important issue even though Tehran was thousands of miles from Washington.

Trump warned Xi against supporting Iran and received assurances, according to the US ambassador to China, that Beijing would not provide such support. At the same time, China's economic relationship with Iran remains an important point of tension between Washington and Beijing.

XI GETS WHAT HE NEEDS?

And that may be the most interesting part of the summit.

Xi did not need to walk away with a spectacular new agreement. Extending the trade truce, keeping dialogue open and avoiding a fresh confrontation with Washington all serve Beijing's interests.

The summit therefore produced something valuable without resolving the fundamental rivalry: stability.

THE BIG PICTURE

Trump got his grand White House moment and a continuation of the trade truce.

Xi got the red-carpet treatment, more time on trade and no obvious concession on Taiwan, AI or Iran.

The ceremony was impressive.

The hard part — deciding who actually gets what — has simply been left for another day.
