Recording Podcasts Etc From Various Sources

Featured Replies

I need to record various radio chats and podcasts (3-6 minutes approx) for my students' use. I have an Imac full size with all the bells and whistles.

I will NOT be recording with a mike---I am getting streamed stuff from the BBC, Radio NZ and various.

A friend who is more savvy than me says I can use garage band, a regular mac app. I have dlded Audacity for mac. But, I don't know 100% how to use either.

I must save/send/export as MP3.

Is there any app out there which is really simple for mac dummies?

Thx

Eddy

download sound flower here: http://cycling74.com/soundflower-landing-page/

open your streaming app -> set it to output to sound flower 2

open quicktime comes with the OSX

start quicktime > File > new audio recording

select the sound flower 2

and continue doing whatever else you are doing ;)

i downed a program called audacity couple of days ago for exactly this purpose.

it's a multiplatform freeware app - google it to find it.

i am new to macs and new to the programm and was initially slightly wary as from previous experience on PC, freeware of this kind are often buggy and complex to work and install and have poor user interface etc. however i am pleased to say that audacity is a very cool app, easy to install and easy to use - an additional encoder is required to write MP3 and M4A files and this was likewise easy to get and install.

during the search for a way to record streamed audio i also read that it's possible to do it via the apple app garage band, but by then i had audacity working so have not investigated this method.

I'd give audacity a shot. It can export to mp3 (From memory you need to download an extra add on for mp3 exports but the program or the audacity website readily guides you through this. It is a very easy to use program and you can easily chop unwanted portions from the audio you record. You can do a lot more but it sounds like you just need to do some basic editing and recording.
