March 11, 201214 yr I realize there is probably no such animal as burglar proof windows, so: I really don't like the flimsy construction and security downsides of sliding aluminum windows (and doors). I think I know that casement windows are more secure as well as being more acoustically sound. But I can imagine myself opening insect screens and snaging drapes. So I'm wondering about the advisability of casement windows narrow enough so even a skinny burglar can't snake through (screen can be installed outside). Two narrow windows flanking a larger fixed window should give plenty of visibility and significant ventilation. I actually like steel framed casement windows. Had them in my shop. How long should good powder coating hold up here in Isan before rust started creeping through? Other suggestions that don't cost an arm and a leg? I understand that well designed 'kamoy' bars are a deterrent. But I also understand that without an internal quick release they can be deadly in case of fire.

But looks expensive. It's a fairly common window treatment in North Australia, and the windows themselves are fairly cheap., there is a locking tilt control for each panel. Standard out of the box installs are not actually very secure, but there are a few DIY tricks to fix that. I can't say I have seen the manufactured ones in LOS though. Maybe some one else has.
March 18, 201214 yr This is a topic I am interested in. But I would like to combine this with a mesh for keeping the mosquitos out. The window-frame should be burglar resistant and easily to open (from the inside) in case of emergency. Because we are using sliding curtains, the security windows should be easy to open (in emergency). So I googles a bit ( keywords window bars quick release ) and found some interesting websites : http://securitywindowguards.com/products/bars.html http://www.securitywindowbars.com/Window-Security-Bars/window-security-bars-aluminium-alarmed.html To get some more ideas, try some of the online patents like here : http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6578664.html For general security advice, look at something like this : http://www.checkbook.org/interactive/homesecu/other/d/article.cfm As with many things one has to compromise, between being secure and being trapped. Kind regards, Leo.
