Tourist boat capsizes off Thailand, all passengers rescued

BANGKOK, Thailand: A boat carrying more than 20 tourists capsized off the coast of Thailand Friday but all passengers were rescued after spending three hours at sea, police said.

The speed boat was ferrying the 17 foreigners and five Thais from the popular resort island of Phi Phi back to Phuket around 2 p.m. local time (0700 GMT) when a huge wave hit the boat and it capsized, police said. Police did not have any details on the nationalities of the foreigners.

The tourists were in the water for about three hours before rescue teams found them, police said. "All the tourists are safe and we are landing at the pier now,'' Marine Police Capt. Chatchai Pakdee said by phone.

Tourists routinely take boats between the popular islands off southern Thailand. Boat accidents are relatively rare, though an overcrowded ferry on its way back from Pha-Ngan Island capsized in January and left seven people dead. --AP

Took a speedboat ride with my Thai wife in this area last yearon our honeymoon.

Three young lads in charge of the expensive boat driving it too fast with no respect for the rough seas, playing lets frighten the 15 tourists.

They stopped when I got hold of the 'captain' by the scruff of his skinny neck and told him to cool it. :o

Seems like quite a few boat disasters this year, and with incompetence as ever to blame.

You'd think with the huge amount of revenue that tourism brings to this country especially in those areas that they would get this problem sorted out ASAP.

It's not only a shame when people that are on holiday die for no reason, but looking at it business wise, it seems ridiculous they allow these incompetent practices are allowed to carry on.

They must be aware that his news goes out to all the countries where there potential customers are. :o
