Custom Officials Seize Illegal Diesel Oil in South

BANGKOK: -- Customs officials have seized a modified fishing boat that was smuggling in 30,000 liters of diesel from Singapore.

Director of the Investigation and Suppression Bureau of the Customs Department, Nimit Saengampai, said customs officers seized a modified fishing boat named Chockchai, and arrested 50-year-old Narong Bualoy and two crew members.

The suspects were selling smuggled diesel to other fishing boats in Hua Sai District of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.

The suspects and their boat were brought to the customs port at Ban Don in Surat Thani Province.

According to the initial investigation, the suspect had smuggled in 30,000 liters of diesel from Singapore worth 900,000 baht.

The boat is found to have been registered in Songkhla Province while a local politician is believed to be behind the illegal oil trade.

The Customs Department has been able to arrest 584 illegal oil traders since October last year. More than 500,000 liters of smuggled oil worth 13 million baht have been seized.

The illegal oil trade has been increasing due to the oil price hike in the country.

Ex-Coup Leader: National Reconciliation is a Noble Mission

BANGKOK: -- An academic from Mahidol University warns that the Constitution drafting assembly could be dominated by the ruling Pheu Thai Party.

Meanwhile, party-list MP General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, who chairs the House committee on national reconciliation, has reiterated that he is working on national reconciliation for the benefit of the country.

Party-list MP Sonthi Boonyaratglin, who chairs the House committee on national reconciliation, said that he did not nominate himself to head the committee, but was chosen by others.

Sonthi asserted that national reconciliation is a noble mission and reiterated that he will propose all of the six recommendations from the King Prajadhipok's Institute to the Parliament. Moreover, the ex-coup leader will hold a press conference today to announce his position on the whole issue.

Sonthi has also commented on the letter against his committee's national reconciliation process, written by Opposition Democrat Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, saying that it is not directed at the committee but at the King Prajadhipok's Institute's proposal.

Meanwhile, Kotom Ariya, a renowned academic from Mahidol University, said that he will submit findings from conferences organized in various provinces to the charter change committee.

Kotom is hoping that his recommendations will be endorsed, especially on the concern that the ruling Pheu Thai Party may dominate the Constitution drafting assembly if its members are representatives of all provinces in the country, reflecting the previous general election result.

No Decision Yet on Bus Fare Hike

BANGKOK: -- The deputy permanent secretary for Transport says the ministry has not made any decision on the fare increase request for public transport operators.

The Central Land Transport Control Board is meeting today to discuss the issue.

Deputy Transport Permanent Secretary Sorasak Saensombat, who chairs the Central Land Transport Control Board, said the panel has not approved any requests for a fare hike by public transport operators.

He added the operators can raise their fares and are not liable for any offense if no consumer complains about it.

There were recent reports that the operator of a public transport service running on Srinakarin Road between Seacon Square and Max Valu Supermarket increased its fare without the board's permission.

Sorasak noted the board is meeting today to consider the fare increase in the wake of rising fuel prices.

The deputy permanent secretary was not concerned about possible protests at the ministry if the board turns down the fare hike requests as long as there are appropriate reasons.

Meanwhile, Thai Bus Operators Association President Sujinda Cherdchai said the association will wait for the outcome of the meeting before considering how it will respond to the board's decision.

Billboards' Stability to be Examined to Prevent from Collapsing

BANGKOK: -- The permanent secretary of the Interior Ministry has ordered officials to strictly examine the stability of advertisement billboards after a tropical storm is hitting many provinces.

Interior Ministry Permanent-Secretary Pranai Suwannarat said that tropical storms in many provinces, particularly the northern and northeastern regions have caused volatile weather, windstorms, and hailstone falls.

Many residential homes have been affected and damaged. Buildings and advertisement billboards were also affected and might collapse due to strong winds.

For this reason, Pranai has ordered all provincial governors to command regional municipalities to inform residents about the stability of buildings and homes, according to the 1979 Act.

Residents must ensure roof tiles are strongly attached, while insecure billboards must be pulled down for safety reasons.

Tropical storm warned in Northeast and along eastern coast

BANGKOK, 21 March 2012 (NNT)-The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has issued a storm warning for people living in the northeastern and eastern provinces of Thailand in the next few days.

DDPM Director-General Mr. Wiboon Sanguanpong said there is a chance of a tropical storm moving through E-san and the eastern coast of the country. People have been warned to take extra cautions when leaving their premises as strong gale-force winds, thunderstorms as well as hails could be expected.

Residents have been advised to make sure large objects are firmly secured to the ground and no other movable items should be left outside as they could be blown away in the winds. Farmers should, according to him, build a strong roof or use sturdy materials to shield their crops from bad weather conditions.

During the event of thunderstorms, everyone should remain in their homes as flying objects may cause injury or they could be struck by lightning. While many people may experience wet and wild weathers, many others elsewhere are now coping with severe drought.

Mr. Wiboon said 30 provinces have officially been declared disaster zones. He urged Thai people to use water wisely in an attempt to contain the situation which, he also hoped, would not expand further to other provinces.

Suzuki launches Thailand-made eco car

BANGKOK:-- Suzuki Motor (Thailand) on Wednesday launched a new version of its Swift compact model under a Thai government programme to promote local manufacture of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Suzuki Motor Corp’s Executive Vice President Toshi Hiro said three versions of the eco-Swift will be available on the Thai market at prices ranging from 469,000 baht to 559,000 baht (15,370 dollars to 18,328 dollars), inexpensive by Thai standards.

The launch of the model, designed to run more than 20 kilometres per litre of fuel, followed a similar launch by Mitsubishi Motors Thailand of its new Mirage model on Tuesday.

Five Japanese automobile manufacturers won tax privileges to design and produce compact, fuel-efficient passenger cars for the domestic and export market.

Nissan Motor Corp was the first to produce a Thai-made eco car, the March, in 2010, and Honda Motors launched the Brio last year.

Toyota Motor Corp is expected to launch a new model for the Thai market by year-end 2012

POLICY RATE

MPC maintains rate at 3%

Seetalavajit Sabayjai

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee decided to leave the policy rate unchanged at 3.0 per cent at today's meeting.

"The 3-per-cent policy rate is an appropriate level to support the country’s economic recovery and keep inflation in check," said Paiboon Kittisrikangwan, the central bank’s assistant governor and secretary to the MPC.

Bank of Thailand Governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul recently insisted that the policy rate would not be raised. He said that inflation is under control, but what concerns him is high inflation expectation among business operators and consumers following the higher oil prices and higher minimum wage.

The rate will stay despite improvement in economic outlook, which may lead to higher inflation. While risks from global economy soften, Thailand’s economy is on the recovery track.

At the meeting, the MPC also revised up its economic growth estimate to 5.7 per cent for 2012 from the previous projection of 4.9 per cent. The National Economic and Social Development Board recently jacked up the projection to 5.5-6.5 per cent.

The MPC also revised up its projection for headline inflation to 3.4 per cent for 2012 from the previous forecast of 3.2 per cent. Core inflation is expected to be 2.4 per cent this year from the previous estimate of 2.2 per cent.

Paiboon also added that the recovery is witnessed in all sectors and the manufacturing sector is expected to stage a full recovery by the third quarter of this year.
