Mistakes in and comments to „Thai for Beginners”

After working through “Thai for Beginners” I found some mistakes and some parts that deserve further comments. I use M, L, F, H, R for the tones. I determined the tones by the tone rules and checked with dictionaries.

If you know of further mistakes or I am wrong somewhere, please let me know.

mistakes

64 ก๋วยเตี๋ยว (not ก๊วยเตี๋ยว or alternative spelling?) noodles

129 ปกติ bpo (not bpa) L ga L dti L normally

130 รถบัส rot H bat L (not H) bus

comments

187 ตำรวจ dtam M ruat L (irregular tone, should be mentioned)

193 มั้ย is used instead of ไหม as question particle without explanation (now I know that this is an alternate spelling which reflects the pronunciation)

(a) little นิดหน่อย nit H noi L is an adverb

little น้อย nooi H is an adjective

big ใหญ่ is used for people, big โต is used for objects

old อายุมาก / แก่ is used for people, old เก่า for objects

thin ผอม people and animals, thin บาง objects

แฟน is better translated as boyfriend/girlfried (“loved one” better as teerak) in my opinion

Numbers are introduced on page 24 and 25, but do not appear in the index.

A few words require further explanation as the meaning is not clear by simply providing the Thai translation: fly (the insect or to fly on an airplane), right (the right to do something or the direction opposite to left), second (first, second, third or second, minute, hour).

Nice post.

I recently went through that book and noticed some errors as I went along, though I didn't note them.

I appreciate your comments. Though I'm not sure about this one: "big ใหญ่ is used for people, big โต is used for objects". I distinctly remember a Thai person referring to a boy who has grown up as "โตแล้ว"; though perhaps she was just trying to use easier "farang Thai" with me.

It is absolutely correct. That means tall person. In your case the boy was fairly tall.
