No coup threat on the horizon, Yuthasak says

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Government figures yesterday rejected speculation of another military coup against the ruling administration.

Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha said he saw no reason or factors for a military coup in the current political situation.

"Today I have much confidence in the armed forces. As a former defence minister, I have worked closely with the armed forces commanders-in-chief and I don't think this thing [a coup] will happen with this government," Yuthasak said.

He said the armed forces have cooperated well with the government. "There have been no signs of discontent. And requests from the military have always been permitted," he said, adding that there was no problem with the recent mid-year (fiscal year) transfers of high-ranking military officers.

When asked if ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra's attempt to return to Thailand without having to serve his jail term would cause some military officers to stage another coup, Yuthasak said he was unaware of any viewpoints from the military regarding the matter. Yuthasak said he did not think Thaksin's plan to celebrate the Songkran festival next month in the neighbouring Laos and Cambodia would be a security issue for Thailand.

Meanwhile, the prime minister's caretaker secretary-general, Police Maj-General Thawat Boonfuang, yesterday also ruled out the possibility of a military coup against the government.

"The armed forces and the government now have mutual understanding and trust. So, there is virtually no likelihood for the two sides to be in conflict or for a coup to be staged," Thawat said.

"I don't think there will be a coup against this government," he said and also dismissed reports that the government set up a "war room" to monitor developments about a possible coup.

Speculation of another coup intensified after General Panlop Pinmanee, an adviser to the prime minister, claimed a group of military officers were plotting to overthrow the Yingluck Shinawatra administration.

Thawat yesterday also dismissed media reports that military and police officers who were Thaksin's former classmates from Class 10 of the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School were planning to bring him back to Thailand safely.

He said that due to their limited influence and power, he did not think the Class 10 officers would want to do so. He added that the reports were just an attempt at "testing the water" or gauging public sentiment about the issue.

Thawat - himself one of the Class 10 graduates - said they had never discussed the matter. He added he believed Thaksin would not return to Thailand within this year.

Taxi drivers want fare hike

The Nation

Taxi cooperatives want a higher fare for cab rides.

BANGKOK: -- "We will ask the Transport Ministry to approve a higher rate of taxi fares," Witoon Naewpanich, a leader of the cooperatives, said yesterday. He said the increase was necessary in the face of rising fuel and living costs.

According to the cooperatives' proposal, a taxi ride for a distance not exceeding one kilometre will still cost Bt35. However, they want the fare for extra kilometres to rise by between eight to 15 per cent.

Witoon said the cooperatives also plan to ask relevant officials to reduce the number of taxis. At present, there are more than 75,000 taxis in the country.

"But we think the number of taxis should range between 50,000 and 60,000 only," he said.

Thais face court in Sisophon

The Nation

SA KAEW: -- Four Thai nationals have been apprehended in Cambodia after entering the country to conduct a survey at a mine without authorisation, Sa Kaew immigration police said yesterday.

The four Thais, two married couples, are in Cambodian military custody. They have been charged with illegal entry and carrying no travel documents, police said. They were identified as Sa Kaew natives Saran Parnphet and wife Suriya, and Bai Sodajan and wife Wanwisa.

The four entered Cambodia early yesterday without notifying Thai authorities. They were due to stand trial at a court in Sisophon in Banteay Meanchey late yesterday, but no verdict had been reached at press time.

Quoting Cambodian authorities and military, Thai police said the four were travelling in two pickup trucks carrying survey equipment and generators nine kilometres inside the country when stopped by soldiers in Banteay Meanchey, adjacent to Sa Kaew province.

The four were reportedly accompanied by a group of four Cambodian border patrol police in Banteay Meanchay - but stopped by a different group of soldiers in Oddar Meanchey, where the mine, their destination, is located.

Tourism Dept: Foreign visitor count grows by 8% in Q1

BANGKOK, 27 March 2012 (NNT) - The Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has disclosed that the number of foreign visitors to Thailand has increased by 8% during the first three months of 2012.

Tourism Department Director-General Supon Sripan said that the total count of foreign tourists, entering the country through immigration checkpoints nationwide during 1 January to 26 March, has seen a 7-8% growth in comparison with the previous year. Consequently, the tourist count for the whole year is estimated to rise by around 8%.

Meanwhile, President of the Thailand-Japan Tourism Promotion Association Anek Sricheevachat commented that Japanese tourists have a tendency to continuously flow into Thailand throughout 2012. Out of the anticipated Japanese visitors, 30-40% will be Free Independent Travelers (FIT).

Mr. Anek added that tourists belonging to the incentive group are still concerned about the political unrest in Thailand and many have decided to postpone their trips. However, it is expected that towards the end of the year, a large incentive group consisting of around 100 people will be traveling to the kingdom. Their visit is believed to be beneficial to the country as it will help restore confidence among other travelers planning to visit Thailand.

FPO Raises Annual GDP Growth Forecast to 5.5%

BANGKOK: -- The Fiscal Policy Office has revised up its economic growth forecast for this year from five percent to 5.5 percent in light of increased investment after the flood crisis, despite the nation's current account deficit expected to grow to 3.5 billion U.S. Dollars.

The Fiscal Policy Office, or FPO, raised its economic growth forecast for Thailand from five percent to 5.5 percent, noting that the nation's economy has returned to normal after the effects from last year's flooding have eased.

FPO Director Somchai Sujjapongse said public and private investments have now grown from 7.3 percent to 11.9 percent year-on-year, while private consumption is projected to increase by 4.5 percent this year, up from a 1.4 percent rate last year.

Despite slow growth in the global economy and the economies of its trading partners, Thailand's export is expected to remain on its growth path at the rate of 13.5 percent, down from last year's 16.6 percent, while import is expected to grow 23.3 percent, compared with the 24.7 percent the previous year.

Most imports are raw materials, capital goods, and machinery for domestic investment. As a result, Thailand will likely record around 7.3 billion baht in trade surplus, while the current account is projected to shrink to 3.5 billion U.S. Dollars, or 0.9 percent of GDP, this year and before recovering in the next couple years.

The FPO expects global oil prices to remain high, with the Dubai crude to average at 118 dollars a barrel. Annual headline and core inflation, meanwhile, is estimated at 3.6 percent and 2.3 percent respectively, with the 300-baht minimum wage increase already factored in.

Thailand's overall economy continued its recovery in February, marked by the resumption of production after the flood crisis, especially in the automotive industry, and an increase of 19.3 percent in VAT collection.

The Thai economy is expected to rebound to a positive territory in the first quarter of 2012 after a nine-percent contraction in the fourth quarter of last year.

The agency says the nation's external financial position remains stable, with the public debt-to-GDP ratio as of December at 40.3 percent, which is below the ceiling under the fiscal sustainability framework and foreign reserves at 1.8 billion dollars, 3.4 times higher than the short-term external debt.
