Spaniel Posted March 30, 2012 Share Posted March 30, 2012 I need some minor repairs on my 40 year old Rolex and hoping someone can recommend a place that they have used and were happy with. I know where the official dealer is on Wireless but was looking for a good but cheaper alternative. If you don't then you may just find that your highly bejewelled work of craftsmanship is returned a little lighter than when you handed it it, yet you can't see inside. It is known! -mel. From bike repair tales, I know that unscrupulous folks may cannibalize your watch and put some inferior parts back in. There is a video on Youtube of a repair job on a Rolex. The parts for a Rolex are unique to Rolex, with the exception of the previous generations of Daytona (which has used the Zenith El Primero and the Valjoux movements), Rolex has made their own movements, so whatever parts you need should be pretty much only made by Rolex. Rolex is a bit pricey for service, but it is worth it. They put your watch in their international computer system and if it is stolen or whatnot and comes for servicing they get it back. They also warranty the repairs for a year, good at any Rolex service center. They also pressure test the watches, which not all watchmakers can do. RussellBellagrego Posted March 31, 2012 Share Posted March 31, 2012 I had my Sea Dweller serviced by a local shop. Cost 6000 baht. Rolex is 16000 on Wireless and takes a month. Two years has passed and it servicing again. I question my savings now as when last serviced by Rolex it lasted ten years. Forget the locals, pay the 16K. submaniac Posted March 31, 2012 Share Posted March 31, 2012 For the screw down crown the threading on the tube the crown screws down on, or the threading on the crown itself could also be stripped. That's actually a fairly simple fix. There are after market tubes and crowns (however the crowns will not be marked with the trademarked Rolex crown symbol). If you replace the tube you also need to replace the gaskets (should probably replace the gaskets irrespective). I would still take it to Rolex. Spaniel Posted April 2, 2012 Author Share Posted April 2, 2012 Thanks for all the suggestions. I took it to Time Midas yesterday (1 April) an authorized Rolex dealer in Paragon. They changed the crown and replaced the gasket as well as giving it a good cleaning. I had to replace the band about 10 years ago so after the cleaning/polishing it almost looks like new.
