Government Schools

Featured Replies

You often read about the free education system which of course applies to Thai Government Schools. Is this true or are there fees involved to send young Somtai to a Government School?

I stand to be corrected on this, as I am depending on my hazy memory, going back a decade or so. I believe there are fees for books and uniforms, perhaps totalling B 2000/semester, or per year, I am not sure which.

my daughter goes to a goverment school it completely free up to about p6 which is about 12 years old there are about 40 kids to a class not that many more than a cheap private school, my kid is doing quite well. learnt to read and write thai in 1 year

the school give you cash every year to buy uniform and books with but you need to show the recipt afterwards

hope this is a help to you

Some of the better government schools that are popular with many parents charge a fee that guarantees acceptance of the student. This is of course not an official fee. I don't know how common this practice is.

No school is completely free, but ithe costs for books, uniforms etc are increasingly being paid by the government.

Some schools offer mini Englishprogrammes, extra lessons etc and for that one has to pay. Normal school activities at government schools should be free.

Great idea as the more views all the better.

One of the main reasons for the initial question was the amount a friends wife has quoted for their daughter to firstly enrol (which appears to be tea money) then the costs per semester. It is a government school I will name but will not name the city.

ANUBAN School (read any city I would I imagine they should all be similar).

The neighbourhood kids are enrolling this week. The girl next door has selected the enhanced program as mario mentioned although not the full EP program. Her parents are paying 10,000 for her extra tuition. Another kid failed the entry exam. As per normal his parents have paid 50k to have the fail forgotten.

Farang will as usual have to do due diligence on the sly with friendly Thai parents to get the real scoop, or will often otherwise be expected to contributed more than the Thais.

My understanding was that family just had to pay for books and uniform.

At a government school at least, you get money to buy certian items. Like uniform, pens and pencils etc. You than have to give the receipt to school. Since studnets need a lot of uniforms: school uniform, scouting uniform, sports uniform and matching shoes) it doesn't cover anything, but a lot.

Books are normally provided for by the school, who buys them at discount price. If not, you should get the money for the books from school.
