April 4, 201214 yr Just got back from the town centre with wife. We have not seen too many people. We had the feeling of walking through a ghost town. No sign of the regular busy life, no sign of the of malaysian tourists, only a few of them, empty massage shops, closed shops..... Having spoken to the guards at the Lee Gardens they say 5 people died, 3 at the spot and 2 in the hospital, not sure if is true or not. And according to them the bomb was planted in the gas tank of the car, this is why the security had failed to spot it. These perpetrators are getting more and more sophisticated. This incident has deeply hurt the tourism and the people relying on the tourism.
April 6, 201214 yr Author You had a call on March 31st informing you of a bomb why this post . I am a local and regular visitor of the town centre. A friend was standing the opposite side of the road at McDonalds other 2 were only 1 block away when the big bang happened. The centre is always a bustling area and I meant to say how sad to see that Hat Yai became a "ghost town". The point of the thread is to express feelings, not expressing facts as everybody knows what happened Up to the ability of comprehension.

You are right, I do not drive car, but drive motorbike everyday. What is the point with the car????? And yes, the local people are still here as they live in Hat yai and cause me head-ache in the traffic for sure. As the title says Hat Yai centre, it was meant to be figurative language. I meant to say town centre, where the toursits hang around, not the town in general. Probably, you have not spent too much time to comprehend my lines. I just wanted to highlight how strange to see the centre without that bustling athmosphere. I meant to say that those perpetrators have really achieved what they wanted, to cause some panic and deter toursists. Strange how many people hang around without any constructive thoughts, only negative comments whatever the topic is. I don`t understand why it has become a sport to demonstrate disdain towards fellow forum members
April 11, 201214 yr It is a chronic shame Garrya when the innocent have to suffer! I have always enjoyed going to Malaysia through Hat Yai, unfortunately the insurance companies appear not to insure you if you are in this area. I was intending to come via this route from Langkawi en route upto Nong Khai but looks as though I will be flying instead. I hate giving in to these bastards, but when you are abroad I guess you have to heed the advice given and of course the Insurance companies love a "get out clause"! http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Thailand Do not travel. The security situation is extremely dangerous. This may be due to a very high threat of terrorist attack, widespread armed conflict and or dangerous levels of violent crime. If you are already in a destination where we advise you “do not travel” you should consider leaving unless you have compelling reasons to stay.
April 11, 201214 yr I was going to get away from Songkhran in Pattaya with a week in Hat Yai, but i won't be going now. Not that i'm so bothered about the bombers but it would be a very boring week.

The best time to fly after Sept 11 was shortly afterwards. Cheap airfares, and you could sit just about wherever you wanted. Tragedies will always happen; just pick up the pieces and move on. I wouldn't rely on insurance too much anyway but for major damages, but that's me.

For what its worth I was in Hat Yai at the start of Songkhran and thought that it was great fun. Hotels were full of Malaysians, there was a stage and DJ set up right in front of Lee Plaza and everyone was having a great time. I'd never been in Thailand for the festival before and as a cynic I thought it would suck, but I was completely wrong, it didn't, it was good.

Sorry I am not prepared to "pick up my pieces" without having adequate insurance... but thats me!
