We are going around the north perimeter of Thailand from tak all the way around to udon tani. Would like mini trips in to Lao and Myanmar if possible on the trip so does any one know crossings in to other countries along the way?

Two crossing points into Laos spring to mind: Mae Sae, which is north of Chiang Rai and Tha Li, a more remote crossing point in the north of Loei province. I have crossed over at both with no problems.

Mae sai doesn't cross into Laos. It crosses into Burma. Chiang Khong is the nearby border crossing into Laos (Houey Xai) which is just across the mae kong river. Chiang Saen has boats over to Laos casinos but not sure if it is a proper crossing point..

Yes, sorry about the mix up, of course Mae Sae leads into Burma and not as I originally posted!

Be very aware coming back into Thailand overland you will only get a 15 day visa exemption stamp, not 30 days like you did when you flew into the country, when you enter back into Thailand, unless you have lots of official tourist visas, or non-immigrant visa with multi-entry permit stamp, or single reentry permit stamp every time you reenter Thailand (obtained before you left Thailand).

It is a wonderful drive up and around.

Hope you have atleast 2 weeks to take it all in

and what is your mode of travel ? Rental ? Car truck or motorbike

My choice would be the motorbike mode of travel to take it all in

For the record Chiang Saen is not "a proper crossing point." for use by non natives of Laos or Thailand.

There's the border point to Laos at Huey Khon, top end of Nan Province, Chalerm Prakiat District. Crosses over to Mueng Nguen, Laos, from which you can head a bit east to the thriving town of Hong Sa, or west to the quiet down of Xieng Lom/Hon. From Hong Sa, you could even continue on to Luang Prabang if desired.
