Danish warship rescues 12 hostages from Somali pirates 2012-04-13 20:00:06 GMT+7 (ICT) COPENHAGEN, DENMARK (BNO NEWS) -- A Danish Navy vessel on Wednesday rescued twelve people who were being held hostage on a pirate mother ship, officials said on late Thursday. They had been held hostage for about a month. The Danish Navy warship Absalon carried out the operation on Wednesday when it came across a pirate mother ship in the Horn of Africa off the coast of Somalia. "The operation was carried out without the use of armed force," a spokesperson for the Danish Navy said. The pirate mother ship was carrying sixteen Somali pirates and their twelve hostages, of which nine are from Pakistan and three are from Iran. "The rescued hostages have provided evidence against the pirates aboard Absalon and have now sailed homewards," the Danish Navy said. The Somali pirates are being held aboard the Danish warship until authorities can decide whether it is possible to prosecute them. "Danish authorities will now investigate whether there is any possibility of prosecuting the suspected pirates," the Danish Navy said in a statement, giving no other details. In February, a similar operation carried out by Absalon resulted in the deaths of two hostages while several others were rescued. But with none of the nearby countries willing to prosecute the pirates, the seventeen suspects involved in the incident were released earlier this month. tvn.png
