WOODSTOCK, N.Y. — Levon Helm, a former member of The Band, is in the final stages of his long battle with cancer.

A message posted Tuesday on the 71-year-old musician's website by his family says "Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer."

Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998 and the illness reduced his voice to a whisper.

I reckon "The Band" as one of the greatest, if not the greatest groups ever.

And they had the brains to quit while ahead.

Wow, I didn't know he'd been battling throat cancer for so long. Great singer from a great band.

A great guy. I heard a recording of a community music get-together he hosted in his home town - to celebrate his first singing engagement since his initial treatments - the love and goodwill was palpable. Bye Levon. I sing 'Up on Cripple Creek' and think fondly of him. Great song from a great band, THE BAND.
