I'm on a non-immigrant "O" extension based on marriage and am going to apply for a new 1 year extension in 10 days.

I also need to start the process of getting a work permit. What are the "timing" requirements for a work permit?

Do you need a certain amount of time left on a visa before you apply for a work permit? When I apply for this next 1 year extension they will give me a stamp for about a month while they send the paperwork away if I remember correctly. It's during this time I'd like to apply for a work permit.

Assume you will not be using the local Thai income route, so not having the WP is not a problem for your new extension.

Best get the new extension first as Labour may not want to process your application since they don't know whether you will get the one year 2.18 extension of permission to stay based on your having a Thai Spouse.

In theory it shouldn't make any difference, but if you can wait a couple of weeks it may be more painless.

It can take sometimes take several weeks to satisfy Labour vis a vis the WP Application paperwork - another reason it's better to have a 'fresh' one year extension in your passport..

You can apply now, but you wouldn't get the WP until you get the extension.

If you need a WP prior to getting the extension, Labor can give you one dated for the end of your current visa/extension. They would change the date to give you longer once the extension is done.

I think this is rather routine for them.

Note that the OP has a 2.18 Extension (Thai Spouse) not an Non Immigrant Type 'O' Visa/Entry Stamp - Labour in my area will certainly issue a WP with this type of extension.

Sorry but the OP as far as I can see has not said if he came here with a Non Immigrant O visa, I came here on a Non Immigrant B but have an extension based on marriage, my company asked me to change to a Non Immigrant B so that I could get the WP, I got what I wanted in the end, but it took some time.

I came on "O" visa based on marriage and am on a year extension based on marriage.
