Obama congratulates former E. Timor military chief Ruak on election victory 2012-04-24 04:03:21 GMT+7 (ICT) WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday congratulated former East Timor independence fighter José Maria Vasconcelos, who is better known as Taur Matan Ruak, for winning last week's run-off presidential election. He also paid tribute to the outgoing president."I congratulate Taur Matan Ruak on his victory in Timor-Leste's presidential election and the people of Timor-Leste for successfully participating in a peaceful, free, and transparent election," Obama said, referring to East Timor's official name. "I also recognize with deep appreciation President José Ramos Horta for his close friendship with the United States during his presidency, and look forward to continuing that productive relationship with Taur Matan Ruak."Vasconcelos, 55, the former commander of the Armed Forces of National Liberation of East Timor (FALINTIL) which fought against the Indonesian occupation of the island from 1975 and 1999, faced former national parliament president Francisco Guterres during last week's run-off vote. Vasconcelos won more than 61 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results."Our partnership with Timor-Leste is fundamental and enduring," Obama said. "It is based on shared values of democracy, freedom, and human rights. The United States remains steadfast in its support of Timor-Leste's efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and consolidate peace and security in the country." tvn.png
