I'm a teacher in los, age 36, US citizen. I worked for one language school for 6 months with non-b, work permit, everything legit. I signed a 2nd contract, this time for part-time work, with the same school & got a new non-b, but the promised 2nd work permit never materialized. I want to teach at a uni next, legally, & my question is this: might a new employer be concerned that I was working with out a wp? Could they either 1) be reluctant to hire me, or even worse 2) report me to labour or some other dept? Has anyone heard of something like this happening? I had no intention of working illegally, but I guess that probably doesn't matter. Thanks for any help.

I can't answer your questions except I do know that getting Non Imm B's has become a lot harder for those who have had more than one.

The embassies in countries near Thailand are wanting to know why, if you have been issued a non-Imm B, you haven't yet got a work permit - I think it is implicit in the granting of a non imm B that you should then get a work permit.

I know there is a new form required in Penang - a WP3?? - from the Labour Office, which is an application for a WP, that the embassy want to see if you already have had a non-imm B.

The above may not be 100% correct but I'd look into it fairly closely. We've had a teacher at our school who has had a lot of hassle recently.

I think there may be thread over at ajarn.com about the problems.

Thanks for your reply SD. In fact I'm in Hanoi trying to get a new visa right now & just this morning I had the very problem you mentioned. My school gave me the same docs that they gave me last time I got my non-imm b from the states (no problem) but the Hanoi staff wanted to know where my work permit was, or in lieu of that where was my form from the Labour dept. I told her, truthfully, that when my last work permit expired I had to return it to the gov't, & that I had previously obtained a visa without the form she mentioned. Then she said "So when you go back to Thailand you'll be working without a work permit?" to which I replied "When I go back my school will start the process of obtaining one for me."

The woman at the desk was not encouraging but said she would submit the application to her boss anyway. This left me with fears of my visa being denied or worse. Can you be more specific about the "hassle" one of your teachers has had?

I mean hassle in the sense that he had to return on a tourist visa and then get the forms from the Labour Office, get them filled out by the school , signed off at the labour office and then had to return to Penang to try again - don't know yet whether he has been successful. Our school won't let anyone sign a contract without the correct visas etc so he has lost a few weeks pay - not to mention the cost of going to Penang a couple of times.

It sounds like your problem might be getting your current employer to fill out the WP3 form if the embassy wants it. Also it means the labour office has it on record that you should be back to get a WP fairly soon. And of course it means you'll have to leave the country again to get the visa.

However I don't think it should be a problem when you apply for your next (uni) job that you have been working without a WP.

Good Luck - I hope you manage to get the B this time.....why do they make it so hard for us to teach here!!!
