Twin suicide bombings in northwest Syria kill 8, injure 100 < br /> 2012-05-01 00:07:17 GMT+7 (ICT) IDLIB, SYRIA (BNO NEWS) -- Two suicide bombers blew up their explosives-laden vehicles in residential areas in northwestern Syria on Monday morning, killing at least eight people and injuring around 100 others, state-run media reported.The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that two suicide bombers blew up their vehicles at Hanano Square and Carilton Street in Idlib, the capital of the governorate which carries the same name, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of Aleppo.Images broadcast on state-run television showed the powerful explosions had blown off the fronts of nearby buildings, damaged vehicles, and left craters in the roads. Human remains were scattered at the scene, which SANA described as a residential area although the attacks are believed to have targeted nearby military compounds.Details about the attack could not be independently verified due to government restrictions on the media, but SANA reported that at least eight civilians and security forces were killed while about 100 others were injured. The UK-based opposition group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed more than 20 people were killed.It was also not possible to confirm whether the attack was carried out by rebels or by the government, as the opposition has accused the regime of President Bashar al-Assad of staging terrorist attacks to justify its violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. More than 9,000 people have been killed as a result of violence in Syria since March last year.On Friday afternoon, a suicide bomber detonated himself in the pro-opposition Midan neighborhood of Damascus as worshippers were leaving the nearby Zein al-Abidin mosque following Friday prayers. A total of nine people were killed, including civilians and law enforcement personnel, while 26 others were injured.
