New York serial killer: Police unable to determine prostitute's cause of death < br /> 2012-05-02 19:57:23 GMT+7 (ICT) LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- Investigators on Long Island in New York have been unable to determine the cause of death of a young prostitute whose disappearance led to the discovery of a serial killer's dumping ground, according to autopsy results released on Tuesday. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office said it has classified the death of 24-year-old prostitute Shannan Gilbert as "undetermined." Her skeleton remains were discovered on December 13, 2011, in an Oak Beach marsh, the same area where authorities found 10 other sets of human remains.Gilbert went missing in May 2010 when she traveled to Fire Island, a 40-minute drive from Babylon, to meet with a client for sex. She left the home screaming and placed a dramatic 911 call in which she said she was being followed by someone. "They're trying to kill me," she said during the 23-minute call, according to her sister. But investigators believe Gilbert was delusional and chased only by her own demons, causing her to run into the marsh and then possibly drowned. Her family has rejected this theory. "We can't accept and never will accept that this woman died by accident," the family's attorney, John Ray, said on Tuesday.Despite the medical examiner's office having been unable to determine to cause of death, police are continuing their investigation into Gilbert's death, which they say is currently being treated as unrelated to the serial killings. "The Homicide Squad continues to actively investigate the circumstances surrounding Ms. Gilbert's death," the Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement. In the serial killer investigation, police have so far identified only five of the ten sets of human remains which were discovered on Long Island. The five victims, all whom were strangled and wrapped in burlap sacks, were young prostitutes who went missing between July 2003 and September 2010. All five prostitutes advertised their services on Craigslist.Police have not found any suspects, but police sources previously told the New York Times that the serial killer likely has extensive knowledge about how police work. "Here is a guy who is aware of how we utilize technology. People are thinking [that] maybe he could be a cop," the source said in April 2011.According to the sources, the teenage sister of 24-year-old victim Melissa Barthelemy received a series of taunting phone calls after she went missing in mid-2009. The calls were made from in or around crowded locations in New York City such as Times Square, making it impossible for police to find the caller on surveillance footage. tvn.png
