The orthopedic doctor that I just visited told me that I need to get an MRI fro my knee and gave me the location of the facility across the street from Sripat Medical Center. The cost is 8K which I have no problem paying but I was still wondering if I can get a MRI for less.

The only thing that might be cheaper is a government hospital, if they have a MRI.

Siripat is the commercial part, they also have a government hospital part (with basicly the same doctors, although you might get a newbie) but lower prices.

8K for an MRI is pretty cheap so I doubt you'll find it much cheaper anywhere. When you say "accross the street" from Sriphat do you mean at Suan Dok since that is a government hospital.

I agree the price sounds about right. The g/f's mother needed an MRI from Suan Dok for her back and I believe she paid 12K THB.

I think I paid 12k at Sripat last year for a knee MRI. 8k sounds like a bargain.

Costs aside, I rate the radiologists at Suan Dok/Sriphat very very highly, they were able to identify something in an MRI of my jaw and neck that other radiologists at Bangkok/Phuket didn't see, that's what you are really paying for with an MRI, not just the cost of the technology.

Thanks all for the comments.

This my 1st MRI so I am a bit confused about your radiologists comment. The orthopedic doctor I went to is Dr. Chanakarn Phornphutkul so isn't he going to be looking at the MRI results to determine the problem.

Your doctor calls for an MRI because he believes there's a problem in a specific area of the body, typically a radiology diagnostics doctor will evaluate the MRI results and give an opinion as to findings. Your doctor will then concur, disagree or find something that a radiologist is not trained to look for although I believe this is rare. Typically the radiologist doctor is the person who does the objective evaluation and not your doctor, that's why that part is all important. The foregoing is also true of x-rays and CT scans.

At Ram on 9 April, I had a MRI of an ankle for 4,000 baht, which included the radiologists MD's interpretation.

I am presenting that cost as is for comparison purposes; it does not include any other costs, strictly the MRI.

Is a knee more complicated and, therefore, more time consuming to MRI? I do not know.

The MRI facility near Sripat called today to let me know that their unit was out of order so I thought I would visit McCormick. Their MRI was the same price, 8K.

Vegabound......would you mind updating this post after your experience with McCormick. Possible rate the service there and give us your impression of that hospital. Thanks. Kevin

Since the doctor advised me to have the MRI done at the facility across from Sripat so I'll wait a few days and have it done there. Both facilities are charging the same price.

I hope you mean "doctors" and not "service" because service isn't really important. Interesting that when we were compiling the pinned Doctors" list in the CM forum, nobidy recommended even a single doctor from McCormick whilst RAM and Sriphat recieved tons of recommendations, to this day I still don't understand what that's all about other than perhaps everyone living West of the river and not bothering to go to hospitals on the East side..
