Pheu Thai Questions 'Rushed' Skytrain Operation Contract

Featured Replies

The election for the Bangkok governor is next January. This accusation by Pheua Thai, which will linger on for a while, is an attempt to discredit the Democrats ahead of that.

Only Eight months to go, of course thats why they brought this up now, it makes perfect sense.........................coffee1.gif

In Thailand 8 months is like a fortnight. It will take that long for the DSI team to rake up some shit. Revealing their findings at just the right time.

You should know that. You've been living here long enough (you DO live in Thailand, don't you)

As mentioned, DSI investigations take time, regular reports on TV referring to the investigation chip away at the public image of Sukhumpand, true or false, it doesn't matter, Personally I think the Democrats should change their candidate for next January but Apisit seems to be fond of Suhumpand.

I had to laugh when Thaksin's old friend,Khunying Sudurat said she didn't want to apply for any political post after her ban ends at the end of the month out of sympathy for the present hard working MPs.

Is she sure her decision to remain out of the political arena is not due to the looming possibility of indictment regarding the ambulance procurement?

It's not that simple. The maximum fare has always been 40 baht. Overnight, that changed to 55 baht, but only for those who travel from the new extension. The extra 15 baht also applies regardless of distance, so travelling from Bang Jak to Ekamai (3 stations) is now 35 baht. The fixed fare price for those with a Rabbit Card is 21-25 baht depending on how many trips you buy, even if you travel from Mo Chit to On Nouch. But if you use the same card to the next station, Bang Jak, even if you only go from On Nouch, 15 extra baht is automatically added (totaling 36-40 baht for one station only). That's an increase of 65%.

On Nut to Bearing (or to any station on the extension) is 15 baht.

Any pre-extension station to any extension station is 15 baht more than the pre-extension station to On Nut. (ie Siam -> On Nut = 40 baht. Siam -> Bearing = 55 baht, Prah Khanong -> On Nut = 15 baht. Prah Khanon -> Bang Chak = 30 baht.)

I thought the reason they used 4 carriages on the Silom line first was because of the bottleneck (single track) at Sapan Thaksin. This meant they could not increase the frequency whereas they could on the Sukhumvit line. Admittedly they still need extra coaches on the Sukhumvit line .

Something spooky is going on here, and "Skytrain passengers would benefit from this lower priced contract because in the long run they would pay a lower fare, while the contract's long term made it easier to plan the procurement of carriages, he said." has already been proven untrue. Passengers using the new stations along the Bearing Extension are already paying 15 baht extra compared to other passengers. In my case, that represents a 65% increase compared to the fixed price that I used to pay, and the 15 baht extra is the same, regardless of distance travelled.

Plans for the the other extensions indicate that they are trying to pretend those will be organised as some kind of separate financial units as well, and I fear that similar extra charges will apply there too. While this obviously makes economic sense for the operator, this is not the way to run a public transport system. Seems to me that the investors have found it's time to harvest from their monopoly.

The fare has always been based on distance from Siam. 40baht to onnut I think 20baht to nana. Your extra 15baht is just the increase for a futher distance. Move closer to your destination and pay more in rent, there are trade offs in life.

We'd all agree there are trade offs, and to take an example of someone following your advice: you move from bang chak to on nut and now your daily commute is 75% cheaper with a smart pass (from ~35 baht/trip to 20 baht/trip). So, you move a kilometer closer to siam, and pay 75% less. I don't know how much of a logical trade off that is in the pricing structure, but that is what they have done. Conversely of course, you'd pay 75% more for bts transport if you moved on nut to bang chak. Anyway, as noted, it is a dubious pricing scheme, bringing up a lot of questions.
