Thai Child Trying To Get Into Thai School

Featured Replies

Hello,

The teenage son of a Thai acquaintance of mine is currently changing schools (he is entering M5 or M4). He has been to 2 entrance tests and apparently did not succeed. She said something about giving some money and getting 'special treatment' to get him into the school.

Does anyone know if this is possible and how much they should expect to pay to get her son into this school? (the school is in Rachada area of BKK and is a normal Thai government school).

Sorry if the information is a little vague but she speaks Thai very quickly and my Thai is not that great!

Thanks.

Let's move this over to the family and children sub forum.

There's no set rules, each school will have their own "system", and while the price may vary depending on how poorly the child fared on the test, it's more likely to be based on how many open seats they have remaining in that year group as opposed to how strong they see the demand is for those seats.

So if M2 has 45 empty slots and there are 60 people vying for them, the price might be set at only 20,000, while M3 has only 15 slots and 50 potential kids that's 35,000.

Obviously the "better" ( = prestigious, not necessarily quality) the more expensive.

And of course the price may be jacked up with "commissions" depending on how many people are between your wallet and the final recipient at the school.

Are you considering donating to the cause because you have an interest in the mother?

Must admit I hate how this has become normal practice, no longer the exception. Was talking with some Thai friends the other day and all agreed this is far more prevalent than before. And of course its the same rotten system that keeps the same useless teachers in place. They too have paid for their jobs.

Never a year passes without LOS moving ever more steadily up the corruption rankings.

Silly but true for 100k
