ICT Minister predicts 50% rise in Thailand's Internet use in 2006

BANGKOK: -- On the eve of the New Year, Thailand's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Ministry plans to see millions more people nationwide have access to the Internet.

ICT Minister Sora-at Klinpratoom said here on Friday that his minister would see to it that the number of people given access to the internet would increase from 12 million people currently to 18 million people within 2006.

The Internet's band width and speed would also be increased, while more telephone lines able to be internet-linked would be installed in remote areas throughout the country, Mr Sora-at said.

The ICT Ministry also plans to deliver 250,000 computers to public schools nationwide within 2006 and to provide laptops, at an average price of 4,000 baht, to students throughout the country, beginning from late 2006.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Can't get a promise on a telephone line in Pattaya City for next year, Can't get ADSL in Pattaya City, can't even reliably connect to the internet in Pattaya City now..........................................

But I suppose that if it takes 50% longer to connect to a web site and 50% longer to download a web page it could truly be said that the internet is being used 50% more, wow, in that case I am surprised the Minister didn't go for 100% more use! Such modesty!

TRT government ministers don't predict - they just spout nonsense to get into headlines. This one is a bit more modest then that nut who suggested wives prostrate at their husbands feet everyday before sleep. He actually admitted that he proposes "new ideas" simply to occupy space on frontpages.

Are those the 'computers' that will be bought in parts (through some government scam, no doubt), and then assembled by vocational students who haven't been trained?

What was the actual, true, researched, accurate measurement of last year's 2005 increase over 2004? How does he know that his deputy under vice minister even has a clue? And if he thinks this last year's usage increased by 25%, and the year before that increased by 30%, then this year's increase might be 20.62%, 11.338589%, or negative -2.369%. He doesn't know. This is Thailand; why would a minister of information have accurate information?

Yes, I'm cynical. Name me the last TRT Minister's prediction that came true as originally claimed.....
