Wetv Confirm Euro 2012 Coverage.

As some might have read, the signal for Thai TV 3, 5 and 9 will be blocked during the coverage of live games on TRUEvisions boxes. This is to avoid piracy of the signal in nearby countries. Or the cynical view could be for GMM-Z to push the sales of their boxes (1590bht).

However, just got a call from WEtv and they confirmed that they will be able to show the games and WEtv subscribers do not need to purchase a GMM-Z box.

I do not know if WEtv will offer English commentary. This is supposed to be available if you do buy the box yourself and changing audio settings.

I must have missed the discussion elsewhere. Does this mean that TRUE TV will not be showing the Euro 2012 games at all? I have not heard this. At this point I would not be surprised by anything from TRUE.

They never showed the last World Cup or the Olympics, both more important IMO, so it's anyone's guess.

Games will be shown by GMM grammy via Thai Tv Channel 3, 5 and 9. Grammy only bought rights for Thailand, so to avoid Bhurma etc... nicking the signal they will block out the signal for Thai TV during the games for UBC. You can buy a GMM-Z box, which works on any dish (including UBC dishes), use an old fashioned ariel antenna, or WEtv. Grammy have emailed me confirming all this and said you can get English commentary if you use the GMM-Z box (1590bht in tesco).

DTV are showing the games but Supporting the England football team in big competitions is just like sex.

An unnecessary amount of hype is created for something that will inevitably end prematurely.

And we are forced to look at the jerk.gif of a manager!

Also, TrueVisions subscribers cannot watch the matches - even if they are aired on free TV. Their TV screens will go blank during the matches. If you can get channel 3 through the normal means, then most games are on there.

I've bought the GMM box but can't get it to tune in. GMM Call Center tell me I have to reposition my True Visions satellite dish! This will obviously mess up my True Visions reception. Anyone any ideas?

You don't have to reposition the True dish. Maybe go to settings and choose Thaicom Ku in GMM box?

NBTC steps into Euro 2012 broadcast dispute

Usanee Mongkolporn

Amid TrueVisions fears that its subscribers may not be able to watch Euro 2012

It is still uncertain whether subscribers of TrueVisions will have a chance to view the Euro 2012 soccer tournament on free-TV channels via their True set-top boxes, though the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission will step in to look into the matter.

The NBTC will convene a meeting today with TrueVisions and free-TV operators - Channels 3, 5, and 9 - to seek ways to prevent problems for consumers.

This follows a complaint by TrueVisions to the watchdog on May 31 that its customers were confused and worried that they might not be able to watch the prestigious tournament - which will be aired from June 8 to July 2 - on Channels 3, 5, 9 via their set-top boxes.

The NBTC's broadcasting committee chairman, Natee Sukonrat, said yesterday that according to the commission's principles, free-TV operators had to treat pay-TV operators on a non-discriminatory basis.

However, the NBTC has to examine TrueVisions' contracts with its customers to see whether TrueVisions has allowed its viewers to watch free-TV channels. If it has done so, then it will have to honour the commitments.

Currently TrueVisions subscribers can view all free-TV programmes via their set-top boxes. But it has been made known that only those with either GMM Z set-top boxes of GMM Grammy or a conventional TV antenna can view the Euro 2012 tournament. If they don't have these boxes, their free-TV screens will be blank during the matches.

Natee said the commission would not summon GMM Z, the GMM Grammy satellite-content and set-top-box distributor, to the meeting as it does not operate under the NBTC regime. The watchdog will oversee only the incumbent operators such as TrueVisions and free-TV channel operators.

GMM Grammy won the right to broadcast the Euro 2012 tournament. It has leased airtime of Channel 3, 5, and 9 to broadcast the matches on a revenue-sharing basis.

TrueVisions' chief programming officer Attaphon na Bangxang said the company's 2 million subscribers would understand well the situation that they might not be able to view the tournament, which will last only two weeks. But TrueVisions' complaint to the NBTC is aimed at prodding the watchdog to set measures that would prevent this kind of problem in the future regarding the broadcast of some licensed content via free-TV channels.

GMM Z chief executive officer Thana Thienachariya said he believed that most of the 2 million TrueVisions subscribers also have conventional TV antennas, which would enable them to view the tournament.

He added that as the company had won the broadcasting rights to air the tournament only in Thailand, GMM Z had to encrypt the Euro 2012 programme to prevent satellite-dish owners in neighbouring countries from being able to view it.

I don't know anything about any of this Euro TV stuff as I'm not a Euro but does remind me, but have you guys even noticed at the pubs they will be showing a fine game of rugby, an actual man's game with real gratuitous violence, then a bunch of Pomms or Euros will come in and they switch it over to the bloody girly soccer? A game of effeminate posturing with all the excitement of watching your dog lickin' his balls, and I mean a real dog, not a Chihuahua. Just sharing...

I used downforeveryoneorjustme.com and it says it is up but trying to connect I get an error that the dns cannot resolve the name. Just checked the whois database and it says not found. Perhaps they forgot to pay their service provider bill.

My test above was at my office. Now I'm at home on my 3BB connection I can access it just fine. Sounds like an ISP DNS or DNS cache issue. I know True has known issues with its DNS so maybe try either OpenDNS or Google DNS servers to see if that fixes it.
