Looking For Good Psychiatrst - Bangkok

Featured Replies

Please inform me if I am posting in this in the wrong forum or subforum or whatnot. I read news threads here in thaivisa daily but I have only actually made a couple of posts looking for information and that was over a year ago, so I sort of don't know what I am doing.

So here it is - I have been in Thailand for about 18 months now and just recently moved to Bangkok, Sathorn area. I have a history of anxiety and panic disorder but I haven't had a problem with it in years. Recently my symptoms have returned. I consulted with a doctor at Bangkok hospital but he had little interest in speaking with me and instead ushered me out the door with four prescriptions and a 4500 bt bill. So, I am looking for a GOOD psychiatrist in Bangkok that takes interest in seriously helping their patients, preferably an individual or center that emphases more holistic treatment as opposed to solely pill popping.

Any recommendations on specific psychiatrists, psychiatric hospitals, or psychiatric centers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Honestly, I have been to the doctor about 10 times now between my gf and I. They are terrible, haven't found a good one, or even a half way decent one yet. I even had one tell us that pains in a leg must have been due to air conditioning and told us to turn off the air, prescribed us 1000 baht worth of pills, and said come back to see me in a week. Ok. Then, I had a bad prescription for eyeglasses from bumrungrad of all places.

Here is my theory.... and I think this applies to your situation..... all doctors in Thailand are about the same level (ie very bad). It doesn't matter if you go to a "nice" hospital that is smart and spends all its money to make the place look great and fools you into thinking the care is actually good. Knowing that, if you do have to go somewhere, why not a place like Bangkok Christian which isn't a conveyor belt cash making machine like the others. I mean the docs are just as good (bad) than the others.

The other recommendation I would have is to look for a farang that is practicing maybe in Pattaya or Phuket?? I have tried to find foreign doctors here in bkk, especially for my eyes, and didn't have luck. Anyway, I wish you luck, but it is a long road to hoe with the docs here :(

Actually from what you say it sounds like you are looking not for a psychiatrist but a pyschologist or trained therapist, there's a difference. Psychiatrists are MDs and do mainly focus on medication. For therapy, be it short-term or longer, you need a psychologist or trained counselor. there are a number of good ones -- Westerners -- in Bkk. See this thread for details.

PSI on Sukhumvit is probably the most convenient for you.

If they feel medication is indicated (beyond the abundant prescriptions you already got!) they'll refer you to someone for that, all therapists have a psychiatrist they refer to for scripts.

Alternatively you could try Manoram Hospital, it is comparatively new and I haven't had any feedback on it but it is a dedicated mental health hospital (private) which aspires to provide comprehensive care of nternational standard.

Apart from visiting a psychologist I strongly suggest that you get any (preferably all) the books written by Dr Claire Weekes. They changed my life and they will probably change yours.
