KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- An suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle outside a police headquarters in southern Afghanistan on Thursday morning, killing five police officers and injuring several others, officials said.

The attack took place at around 10 a.m. local time when the attacker detonated his explosives outside the police headquarters in Argistan district, which is located in Kandahar province. Governor spokesman Javid Faisal confirmed the attack, which damaged the headquarters' building and several vehicles.

A government official said five police officers were killed and six others were injured, but their conditions were not immediately known.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack, adding it was part of its so-called spring offensive against Afghan and foreign troops. "As many as 10 puppets were killed and several dozen more got injured in a martyrdom attack carried out by a lone Mujahid (Muslim fighter) of the Islamic Emirate (Taliban) who slammed his explosive-filled vehicle into the district police station," he said. The Taliban frequently exaggerates casualty figures.
