MOSCOW, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- Three people drowned on Friday when a pleasure boat capsized on a river in southwestern Russia, a police spokesperson said on Saturday. Several other passengers survived the accident.

The accident happened when a boat carrying a total of ten people collided with a floating tree on the Volga River in the federal subject of Saratov, located in the country's southwest, causing the pleasure boat to capsize. Rescue teams reached the scene within several minutes.

A police spokesperson said two people managed to swim to safety while rescue workers were able to rescue five people, including two children, who were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The RIA Novosti news agency said the five victims were suffering from shock.

However, rescue workers were unable to save the three remaining people on board, including a nine-year-old child and an unidentified man in his 30s who was hit on the head by the ship's hull. Details regarding the third victim were not immediately released.

In July 2011, a total of 122 people were killed when the overloaded cruise ship 'Bulgaria' sank on the Volga River near the village of Syukeyevo in the Kansko-Ustinovsky district of Russia's Republic of Tatarstan. Nearly 80 others survived the accident, which was one of the country's worst maritime accidents in years.
