We're in the process of gathering all the bumf to apply next week and the misses is comvinced she has to have the Thai marriage certificate translated into English, is this so?

From Thai into English or the other way round?

If the former, it would help. There's no absolute requirement: it just depends how awkward the visa officer wants to be. For the sake of a few hundred baht, I'd have it done rather than risk incurring the ECO's wrath.

No. But they will require a certificate stamped on the translation by the translation agency to the effect that it is an accurate translation. Any reputable agency will do this automatically.
