the 4 door prerunner auto costs about 90K more than the normal 4 door vigo auto. I am wondering if it makes sense to buy the regular 4 door and use that 90 k to upgrade the suspension and big tires etc...

AFAIK the Prerunner only comes in manual 2wd. You must be thinking of the auto 4wd?

I just checked with toyota 2 days ago--the prerunner 4 dr auto comes with leather and mp3 player 761K i have the priclist at home.

You're right!

so why did you hate the nissan ??????? (really)
I dont hate it really, if i hadnt had a vigo first i probably would have lived with it a while, however after the vigo it no comparison, its noiser, build quality is not as good and what ever they say about its power it is not as torquey as a vigo, it does have a 500 cc disadvantage i know but they hyped it as having more torque ,mmm, i couldnt find it, .in the bottom 3 gears its lethargic, they have mapped the power for the higher gears and up there it isnt bad,. ,what put the final shovel of earth on the coffin was i drove a friends fortuner smart, superb, the suspension is differentamongst many other things and as soon as i closed the door i felt at home, im an ex car dealer and toyota arent number one for no reason, .everyone to their own and no doubt the navara owners will jump on my case, bit its not in the same league, sorry Edited by mikethevigoman

Still no one can tell me if I cant make a better prerunner than Toyota for 90K? There must be suspension lift kits for the Vigo--something that would give me a softer rear as I would not use this ride to lug heavy cargo around. Basically I need the name of a trustworthy suspension specialist in BKK.

Probably could but would you want the hassle and then the lack of 'Prerunner' status? Also, would you messing with it mechanically effect the warranty and does the regular four-door come with ABS etc?

I've a question - does the manual Prerunner come with airbag(s) as standard and if not how much to fit/big hassle?

this is exactly part of the reason why ive been hesitant to get one, from what ive read on the net, the navara appears to have a very narrow powerband , hence the need for 6 gears... eventhough id get an automatic, i dont know how it would compare until i test drove a few brands.

i love the front and body though.

would you happen to know anything about the 2001 or 2002 volswagon passat? either V5 or TDI? would really appreciate any input you may have, the reviews for these models are very disturbing regarding reliability....just not sure if it is a marketing war from other manufacturers.

Great car, i had 2 vws new in 04-05, one a golf 130bhp, never missed a beat and an awesome vwt5 van ( pic enc ) the van came at 174bhp and after a week i chipped it to 205, it flew and i never had any warranty issues, never used any oil and i gave it hel_l,.i think on these forums you get all the whingers and no doubt some people have experienced some problems, however i feel if they had a forum for giving good reports you would never get on as it would be too busy, as with any vehicle look for a service history and general condition, but all in all a very good range especially the diesel, that 5 cylinder in my van was worth the money on its own !

Picked up my Prerunner 2 days ago, no airbags as standard on the Prerunner but does come with ABS.

I shall be having a word with the man from Toyota next week when I return to have the alarm fitted, no mention of Leather or Auto when I asked about what options were available! :o

List price of the prerunner 4 dr manual (no leather) and mp3 player 741K, Auto + Leather for 761K ? Extra 20k I wish I was told that before I orderd mine.

Actually I am looking at the price sheet now and am a little confused. It is possible that the sales girl got it wrong and quoted me the price for a Hilux Auto 4 door.

There was a prerunner on display and I asked her if that was available in automatic gear--she said yes adn said it included leather and mp3 for 769K,-but looking at the sheet it has that price for the hilux--non-prerunner.

Check and double check at these dealers, the staff mostly are absolutly useless, i had one tell me they didnt do a 2 wheel drive auto 3.0 d4d, utter rubbish i found out after buying a 4x4 to get the auto,.

Problematic quality + extremely expensive service / parts make for an unhappy combination. Great ride, nice looks, but expensive.

I was forever considering various VWs while living in the U.S. and lots of my friends had them (Germans living abroad - go figure!). The Golf is the most reliable model, and some the T4, T5 buses are indestructible, but a lot of other models have serious quality issues.

And in LOS they cost 2x so most definitely not recommended.

Yep, the vans and the Golf.. :o

My mom has a Golf diesel - it's now 10 years old and I was pretty impressed how it still drives almost like a new car. Great suspension, decent power, looks, and about 5.5l/100km.

the reviews for the passat are horrific....BUT my friend has a 2003 passat and has had no major problems...but does mainly highway driving....to me this would be the perfect car, especially being a diesel and it moves pretty quick.

the depreciation rate is very high for passats in thailand, almost 100k per year....making it relatively affordable for initial purchase...but when you sell it.....

  • 2 months later...

I owned hilux vigo 4x4 3.0l manual driven for 4 months find difficulty in towndriving especially at very low speed while switching between gears. Anybody knows if it's due to the eletronic throttle which i find a lag everytime starting on a gear. Any explanation from anyone in the same situation with the manual transmission. I actually bent down to look at the fuel paddle to discover it's electronic with those wiring and felt the old system of mechanical linkage works better at least for the manual transmission.

Picked up my Prerunner this week. No airbags and no options for it. I have a 4 door version. No automatic available, but rumours abound that next model will have auto.

I had a Toyota 4x4 Sport Cruiser for 4 years. It was a great car. But I miss the automatic feature.

My new one is very top heavy. But what a powerful engine. Great pick up (speed from 0 to whatever).

Some negatives:

Looking at the rear view mirror, you cannot see the top of the tailgate. So difficult to judge where the car is when backing up.

Top heavy. Doing 60 on a curve is not too fast. But I feel the car inclining too much.

I added rubber bumper guards to all four corners. Difficult to judge where the bumper is.

Stereo. With mp3, cassette and cd. Boring green lcd screen. No matter how much you reduce the bass, it is still too strong. I cannot enjoy Pavarotti with this p.o.s!

Positives are many, but the ones I and my family enjoy are:

Wider interior. Passengers in the back still have leg room even after the front seats are pushed to the back at the maximum. Falangs enjoyed the ride more because of the leg room.

You are high! Power....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

From 2nd. to 3rd. to fourth, you can change very fast and it leaves everyone behind.

Higher interior. My tall friends do not hit their heads, so no need to spend more on beer that day!

Smoother shocks, but rear passengers still jump when going over a speedbump. I will change the shocks soon!

Alarm buttons are part of the key.

Cup holders for driver and passenger. 4 cup holders behind.

More document storage. Top and bottom of console panel.

2 12v. power outlets.

Sunglass holder on ceiling. WARNING. Very small, so you people with large 70s style glasses, forget about it.

I paid 749k. 4 doors, tinted windows, liner, alarm with demobilizer (key has a chip inside). No options offered nor asked. Cloth seats. 5 speed.

I agree that when I first bought my Vigo, it is very difficult to judge distance when backing, but I quickly solved that problem by purchasing/installing a backup sensor system that provides an audible beeping and solid tone to provide distance information. It can be purchased and installed for as little as 1,400 baht for a 2 sensor system to 2,500 baht for a 4 sensor system. You can also purchase systems with led or digital visual indicators.

I own the Vigo double-cab, 4-wheel drive exclusive model and I find that it corners very flat with only the slightest bit of body roll is pushed. I think that the rearend would break loose before I would experience any significant body roll.

Here in Phuket, the visual backup sensors that are installed (front and back) are nice. The visual is on the rear view mirror. Nice! 4000 Baht. I will install it this week, I hope. Well worth the price.

BUT, CAR IS 4 DAYS OLD. JUST HAD THE BRAKES CHECKED. Too much pedal to the metal and I used the handbrake to stop.

Not good.

Why not save the money by learning how to use your off & near side mirrors!! Thats all truck drivers have when reversing a 44' trailer.

I only use my internal mirror for checking the dogs ok in the back.

Well, bad brakes on day 4 doesn´t help.

I have driven pickups and 18 wheelers for years. I know how to use them.

The trucks here are a bit out of the norm.

I do install the closeup mirrors on both sides, big help with motorbikes coming at you from both directions.

I drive defensively, hence the additional cost for the mirrors and the backup sensors.

The sensors help me back up because backing up in small parking spaces, high curbs are unseen when backing up.

The Prerunner is very high and it raises higher in the back than the front. So you do not see the top of the tail gate and even if you could, you cannot judge distances due to height.

I installed the sensors yesterday and I am happy. That is all that matters, at this point.

And for the truck drivers backing up a 44 foot trailer. They do not use gay mirrors that come with the pickup trucks. They use two or more on each side of the truck to judge distances. You are comparing apples to oranges. Sorry, we are in Thailand. You are comparing durian with mangosteen.

AFAIK the Prerunner only comes in manual 2wd. You must be thinking of the auto 4wd?

Up date from mikethenavaraman2 !, got rid of the manual, got the se auto 2 wheel drive with all the extras, jacked it up 2 inches ,. got a power up unit to 210 bhp and modded it, oh, and auto, that was the thing i hated on the other one, manual box, ugh,.got projector headlights and nissan chrome wheels from the states, auto is much better and it flies, eats fortuners ! ha ha

Good points!, I too am an ex lorry driver (C+E - old hgv1 in UK) and used to clock up to 350+ km's per day. I find driving in Thailand not too bad, in fact just done a run to Kanchanaburi from Petchabun, mostly dual carriageways and hardly any traffic apart from small diversion into Suphanburi.

Lorries in UK have a minimum of 5 mirrors, 3 on the offside and 2 on the nearside, but you still have to judge your distance when reversing and watch out for hazards- pedestrians/forklift trucks etc when backing up in factories/supermarkets. My last work was for a well known supermarket chain, delivering/ mainly milk! all over North London, do not miss it one bit.

Anyway as this has little to do with Prerunners and I own a Nissan I will sign off now.
