Need Suggestions For Stop Overs Flying Bkk To Heathrow

I live in Thailand but in March 2013 I want to attend a relative's wedding in the UK. I am researching how to avoid the long haul non stop flight BKK to Heathrow, so my idea is to book a flight with perhaps 2 stop overs from BKK before getting into London.

I would like to spend perhaps one or 2 days in some interesting/exotic/exciting places for my stop overs. I hope that each leg of my trip could be aproximately around 6 hours hence to avoid too long in the air so to speak.

Can anyone suggest or recommend some stop overs?

I have already had one suggestion namely Sri Lanka(Columbo) as one stop over.

Hopefully places for the stop overs where I can get visa's on arrival; I have a British passport.

(I have not decided my return journey back to BKK yet).

Any ideas gratefully received!

I understand your concern, but I think trying to add 2 stop overs would just make the journey that much more tiring. Plus, you're going to add a lot of cost to the ticket, I would think? Get an isle seat so you can walk around a bunch???

I applaud your attempt to combine long-distance travel with discovering new places, but I also agree that this would be costly - you could fly Bangkok to Sri Lanka on AIr Asia if you can find a good fare - but not sure there is an inexpensive way to do this roundtrip - unless price is not a consideration.

Good Luck.

have to agree with RabC, Oman looks a great place, or even Doha. I hated Dubai airport so my impressions of Dubai went down. Abu Dhabi with Etihad, then they have a special offer for tickets to Ferrari World at Yas Island.

Turkey and Istanbul for a mix between Asia and Europe.

My thoughts on Doha is that its not quite as "liberal" and doesn't have the depth of history, sights to see.

Oman Air. Oman is a lovely country without the commercialisation of the UAE. Friendly people, exotic, some great sights and visa on arrival for Brits.

Oman Air to Paris via Muscat and then the chunnel to London seems like an interesting combination.

A stop over in Jordan can be easily achieved with Royal Jordanian Airlines. They can do a 3 day stop over called Zuhwar as part of the package and all hotels and excursions at places like the Dead Sea are included although I would recommend the stop over I would suggest you make you own way around. Dead Sea/Petra/Wadi Rumm.Aqaba.

Royal Jordanian are members of one world alliance so its easy to get connect/onward flights. You could possibly combine Jordan and Dubai somehow. Flying times from Thailand to the Middle East and the Gulf are reasonable and your options are plenty when flying with the likes of Etihad, Emirates, Qatari etc.

I suggest an internet search engine such as skyscanner, lastminute.com, ebookers and opodo. Most have multistop booking ability and will show most available routes and best prices.

Many thanks all the replies which have been interesting, especially from captainwillie, and to answer another poster, price/cost is of course a consideration.I welcome any other suggestions or recommendations.
