Immigration Conduct Random 'Surprise' Drug Tests Of Foreigners On Sukhumvit Soi 3

You guys are real tools and should get out of the country...based upon your lack of acceptance of cultural differences between Thailand and your own home country. If you are complaining about foreigners being targeted by random drug tests, you're morons. First off, foreigners are guests of this country that are expected to comply with the statuatory laws and cultural morals of Thailand and if not, be ready to be asked to leave the country quite quickly. Secondly, why would anyone with any sense or intelligence expect the IMMIGRATION police to randomly check Thais? IMMIGRATION POLICE, doesn't that light the light bulb in your heads, no matter how dim it might be? Lastly, if you aren't doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about for the most part. No culture or country is perfect and if you're going to whine and complain about such an insignificant event, get the hell back to your own country and leave this relative paradise to the appreciative and respectful visitors and expats. Good riddance and don't let the plane door hit you in the ass.

Absolutely spot on! Great to finally see some legit remarks on this super duper blog! If you don't like the laws GO HOME! Stop belly aching about everything here, it's there country. Go help your own country with your expertise in everything!

BASICLY IT IS WITHIN YOUR RIGHTS TO REMAIN SILENT AND REFUSE ANY DRUG TESTING

Your rights are determined by the entities governing the little patch of land you happen to be occupying. On Soi 3, that's Thailand.

Between the East and the West, there is a fundamental difference in the rights of the individual vs the rights of society as a whole. The difference comes from 4,000+ years of history and culture. I'd suggest researching some of that history before making blanket statements about "rights".

I'll let others argue incessantly over whether the East or the West has the best system.

As for me, I'll obey the laws of the country I'm in and expected to be treated according to their laws and not the laws back home. If that means peeing in a cup, that's what I'll do.

By the way, someone please post back if they start testing foreigners at the Sunday Buffet at one of the big local hotels. I'm not too worried about getting tested in an area like Soi 3 because I avoid those areas during "peak hours" anyways.

You are only party correct.

They did do the same thing about 12 years ago only in soi 4. After a number of embassy's and agency's lodged complains, they stopped to target foreigners.

In Pattaya, clubs get raided frequently and foreigners are always escorted out prior to tests taking place.

This latest random checks is either out of desperation due to lack of funds, or yet another attempt to get some attention and try to trade off something for something.

You will note that tests took place in mainly arab used soi,and no other place, it is very possible that someone is getting pressured back in Dubai, for them to put pressure back(just a thought)

This is my point when the embassy's and agency's lodged complaints they know they couldn't keep doing wrong and that is breaking the code of International human rights lawful laws.

Don't get me wrong I have been staying and living in this country for over six years and I'm married with a three year old boy. so love and respect everything about Thailand except when it is my rights that have been fringed upon...! and that would be to any country I'm staying or living in.

Love the moronic "if you don't like it, go home" and "anyone who is out after midnight must be evil incarnate" idiots who continually spout their dribble on threads like these without ever really contributing anything to them.

You'd think none of them have ever done any wrong, nor a drop of the Demon Drink pass their lips...

Good point, Although I would say why not target Thais? That is the principle for me. Surely we are not saying that immigration police only police crimes committed by foreigners !! If an immigration policeman sees a Thai robbing a 7/11 he wouldn't just ignore it because he is immigration police.

My follow on from that would be why are immigration police going out to check for drugs and not just normal police anyway.

I would think this was actually aimed at targeting foreigners overstaying, without documents etc. and some bright spark came up with the additional idea of drugs testing. I doubt that it's in immigration's brief to just go out and do drug tests so they'd need another reason to pull someone up first - and they wouldn't test any Thais. Though if they knew a Thai was carrying drugs I'm sure they'd do something.

What a joke! They should really be targeting taxi drivers, bus drivers, BTS operators, and MRT operators who pose a much greater risk while high on drugs, not someone walking the streets at night. Thailand is getting to be more anti-foreigner by the day. That's ok, because we are not stupid and we are looking elsewhere to spend our money.....I'm in the process of moving my money to Viet Namcoffee1.gif

Hopefully you are going with your money,i'll just stay stupid.

I think I read a similar threat before. Must be a lot of money cause it's taking a long time or is just a ploy to get the Thai government to promise change and beg him not to leave.

I've never been to Vietnam but I've heard Communism is good, so I'm considering moving all my money over there too.

Why dont the Thais stop this war on drugs?

Let people be, if people wish to take drugs then let them, its just wrong to stop people and test them for drugs.

So what if they are illegal, the people are not selling the drugs or fighting, just having fun.

Well maybe you should visit Viet Nam before you comment. My Thai wife and I have been in the tour business since 1973, employ 9 Thai's with a combined payroll of over 4 million baht a year, contribute to several chairites. But every year it becomes more and more difficult to operate here due to the constant complaints of our clients due to the scams, police extortion, rude taxi drivers, the threat of being murdered or maimed, harrasment during shopping and nightlife, the list goes on. Many of my clients are young, spend alot of money here and like to go to the clubs. I don't have a problem with Immigration police doing their job but we have a drug task force here that obviously isnt doing a good job because the yaba problem gets worse every year. The reason for that is because many of the dealers on Soi 3 are "protected" by the police so they can get tea money from them. If Thailand was really serious about fighting the drug problem then they need to target the Thai's who supply and distribute the drugs to the foreigners and do a better job of treatment for drug abuse here. It's a supply and demand problem that has caused more and more foreigners to smuggle ice and other drugs to meet the demand. If a client from the USA for instance comes here that is prescribed medical marijuana by a DOCTOR, then he shouldnt be scrutinized by a random drug test while on vacation here. In Viet Nam we have never been subjected to this type of harrassment by the police towards our clients. I have been living there for 7 years and never see the scams and threat of getting robbed or murdered like we see here in Thailand. Vietnamese people are very kind, caring, and always interested in meeting new people often making sure your having a good time without harm. More and more of our clients are booking tours there and alot are refusing to come back to Thailand due to the threat of coups, police harrasment, scams, ect. And frankly we don't blame them. The politics and corruption make it harder for foreign investment here and that is why we have had enough. We are basing our tours out of DaNang now and will pull out of the Thai market soon. We love Thailand and it's people and stay here to take care of my wifes parents only but the quality of life and "Cultural Values" are a joke here. And Paradise? Not in Phuket or Pattaya anymore. I feel safer in Viet Nam and never feel like I'm living in a communist state there. I have never seen police come into a club there or on the streets and administer a drug test. And BTW, I have seen police escort foreigners out of clubs and administer drug tests to Thai's only so I suspect the Immigration police only ran this sting to those who were refusing to pay tea money to the local police or newbies trying to step on those that do. If you have been in Thailand long enough you know how things work. Trust me, my neighbor is a high ranking policeman and jokes about police corruption so we are in tune what occurs here. If I didnt keep his card in my wallet I'd be paying out tea money almost everyday at police checkpoints and nightlife hotspots simply because I drive a nice car. Your rights and quality of life are being diminished more and more everyday in Thailand and if Thaksin is allowed back in just watch your back because it will surely get worse. Choke dee krapwai.gif

Good info as I wasn't here back then.

But keep in mind a lot has changed in 12 years.

Embassies from countries that used to claim the moral high ground now have to deal with the reality that their own countries are virtually strip searching people at airports. Sadly, the kneejerk reactions to 9/11 have resulted in the erosion of personal privacy and freedoms we used to take for granted. Add that to the random searches of persons and vehicles justified by the (doomed to fail) War on Drugs, it's definitely not the same world I grew up in.

And that's definitely not specific to Soi 3 or Thailand....

Thanks for your feedback. I enjoy the give and take from considerate people that hold opinions different than mine, based on experiences I have not had.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere, but for what drugs did they test?

Methamphetamine, THC, Opioids, Benzodiazepines, ? ? ? (Did I miss any?)

Presumably alcohol is legal, so that wouldn't matter.

Also, what will happen to those people?

Is it the same penalty as possession? Will they be deported? Tried on criminal charges?

Just wondering, thanks.

wai.gif

I read on another forum that male impotence drugs like viagra (kamagra), etc., are actually illegal in Thailand even though you can buy them on the street and even at certain pharmacies in the lower Sukhumvit area.

Could this be one of the reasons for the 50% positive test rate?

Does 50% of tourists in Thailand have a libido problem?

Probably not, but it's possible that it could be a high contributor in the area of Sukhumvit where this check was done. Also, I've known several 30 and 40 something year old guys who use the stuff because they say it enhances their experience (I guess they can get more for their money in an hour or two short time encounter) even though they did not normally need the drug(s) for any dysfunction.

and ?

Why is the fact that they are foreigners an issue ? Doesnt matter who they are. The news is not exactly headline stuff anyway but surely this should read "33 randomly selected people" .

Thailand as usual keeping their reputation as being possibly one of the most racist countries in the world.

Thailand is not controlled by a fanatical PC government desperate not to cause offence to groups of people that are known to break laws e.g. terrorists, and so can use profiling to target the likely suspects.

I was on Khoa San road one night and saw a troop of coppers in riot gear head into the Lava club, there must have been 30 of 'em with clubs and helmets on, etc...... 5 minutes later all farangs came out, and I pulled over one Dutch guy who looked like he just escaped the electric chair. I asked him what happened and he says " The cops came in, told all the falangs to leave, and then started making every THAI person pee into a cup to check for drugs!"

so sometimes it happens in reverse, so as to not make a dent in the tourism numbers....... Thailand, the only country I know which discriminates against their own people and lets the westerners walk!

Yes, I agree. I once saw the police go into Insomnia in Walking St. They sent all the foreigners outside and then tested all the Thais inside.

WHY DONT THEY DO THIS IN KO PANGNANG ????

where is this mysterious "KO PANGNANG", and why are you yelling?

9° 45′ 0″ N, 100° 2′ 0″ E

It's a pretty popular island in Thailand.

have you never seen police coming to the disco, blocking the entrances and making checks in your home country? many years ago they didnt do tests, that wasnt available, but they were looking at people (eyes), smelling for hashish, searching pockets and checking at id-cards... happened fairly often, already some decades ago in europe...

If you do not take drugs and therefore abide by the law then you have nothing to worry about. Whether immigration ot Thai drug officers catch anyone, foreigner or Thai, is good as far as I am concerned.

and if you are a tourist who just arrived but did have some drugs back home, what should you do then?

To make it even more interesting, say you are Dutch where smoking marej is legal and you just arrived for a holiday

It is even legal in the US, well, in California it is. I'm sure the Thais don't care too much about all this, because they are full proof arguments actually based in sound logic.

you smoke marijuana in amsterdam, then enter a train to a neighbouring country (where marijuana is not allowed)...

past the dutch border, you might have to undergo a drug test in the train (happens, plain clothes officers), which shows positive...

thats at least an offence, you will have to pay a fine...

its not just about bringing drugs to a country, its also about the state of being drugged, which is unlawful...

and at the airports, there are often customs officers with drug-dogs, you have to pass by when exiting the plane...

pay a small fine (never ever heard of random checks blood or piss tests unless some kind of accident) or be locked up and deported, you do not think there is a HUGE difference?

PS. In the West to my knowledge police have no right to drug test you unless you were involved in an accident which you caused or were involved in a fight where serious injury's were inflicted.

You also have the right to refuse and would need a court order to proceed, AGAIN, there has to be a very serious incident for this to take place

This may have changed since i lived in the West last, but again, never read or heard of any since i been here taking place in the West.

No <snip> the article said "33 randomly selected foreigners"

If they had taken a random sampling of Thais and foreigners this would have been more justifiable, but targeting just foreigners is unacceptable

Crobe

Unacceptable in real countries, but not Thailand. They could never see past their noses to see it as unacceptable

i saw it with some plastic thing, which they moved over someones fingers to finds traces of drugs...

it was in a crowded train and the guy tested looked clearly drugged in some way...

out of curiosity i asked, if it wasnt the persons private life whether they smoke marijuana in amsterdam or not, they said "no", asked for my id and drug-tested me too...
