Windows 7 Display Language

I'm using a Samsung laptop bought in Thailand with the usual romanised and Thai keyboard. For most things Windows displays English and it's set up for me to change to the Thai keyboard when I need it. However, the pop-up boxes eg for downloads are shown in Thai.

I went to Control Panel:

>Clock, Language and Region

>Change Display Language

>Administrative

>Change System Locale.

I changed it from Thai to English(UK) and on restart I tried to download and it just gave jumbled characters; everything else is still in English, as before. I tried other languages with the same result. I'd appreciate any help - please take pity, I'm obviously no expert but I've tried to DIY and now scratching my head. Thanks

I know for XP you could get Language Packs from microcrap to change the primary language of windows to whatever you wanted. Sounds to me like your version of 7 has Thai as it's primary internal language. Maybe you need a language pack to change it to english. The language bar at the top does not change the primary internal language, at least in XP anyway. I assume 7 is probably the same.

It also be possible you have a bootlegge copy of windows on yr machine . My Gf's old Acer had a bootlegge copy and i could not change the Spell Check from US English to English English because the copy of XP had been trimmed down to exclude a few of the extras like languages etc . Fixed everything up when i installed a genuine copy of XP.

Are you using Win7? Your post says so.... I use Win7 starter. To check, I go

>Start>Control Panel>Region and language. Then

1/. Check the Format tab, then Format box - what does yours currently say? I've got mine at English (Australian)(not compulsory)

2/, Check the Location tab - mine is set at Thailand

3/. Check the Keyboards and Language tab - mine is set on Eng..(Austr...)(actually it is English USA)

Let's know what you are using, or try putting these options in.

It is also possible to add Thai language, using these features.

If the pop-ups you describe are advertisements, I would suggest you insert an ad-blocker in your browser. Can google.

Also, maybe your browser is set to Thai? Can search in forums here how to change Chrome to English. If you use MSIExplorer, can google their help facility. AA

Is it possible it's just a browser settings problem? Or browser version? If you can switch from English to Thai and back while writing a document, and your time and date settings look like UK time/dates, the problem is not in your system. Windows 7 display language should be OK. But check encodings and other settings on your browser, preferred display language, etc. etc. I used to be a bit of a jock on this stuff, but am now years out of practice. Doesn't sound that difficult to straighten out, though.

I've managed to get it sorted, I played about with the same settings again and Hey Presto! Not sure what I did differently but just happy. Very Many Thanks for all your help.
