BKK Pattaya Hospital can do these tests for about B4,000. Are there others that have the equipment and are less expensive?

..... BP Hospital has some very good physicians.

Unfortunately there's no guarantee that you'll get one even if you pay for one.

Rutnin has by far the best reputation in Thailand.

I suffer from detached retinas with the most recent one last November.

After much research and many many visits there are 2 doctors I can recommend who are the only ones I would trust;

1.) Dr. Roy is based at Rutnin Eye Hospital Bangkok is Thai but American trained and speaks with a slight American accent.

2.) Dr. Pipat who only last week finished his clinic at Bangkok Pattaya and now runs a clinic a few days a week from Piyvate hospital in Bangkok he also sits on the medical board of retinal specialists and speaks very good English.

If you go to Rutnin you can have numerous tests done including OCT for around 2,000.

You need to make an appointment in advance for Dr Roy but never too long. He recently operated on my eye about 2 months ago and during a business trip to NZ and Australia I had follow up visits and the specialists in both countries were very satisfied with the work he performed.

I know several other foreigners that have retinal diseases and all swear by these 2 Doctors.

Dr. Pipat will if time permits if surgery is required may recommend you go up country to one of his other government hospitals for survey where he says the equipment is much better and the price is a fraction of the private hospitals. It also surprised me that a government hospital could have had better equipment but it was true. Dr Pipat will meet you there to perform the surgery.

I recently had 2 major operations during same stay with Dr Roy at Rutnin with a 5 night stay in their top of the range room, simply amazing room or suite with total cost for the 2 major ops only 150,000 baht.

PM if you need any help or advice.

One more point, there are many bad retinal doctors so please tread carefully - my first detachment some 8 years ago was treated by a Dr at BPH who miss fired with the laser and subsequently damaged my central vision for life.

He later worked at Pat Int and was also kicked out after numerous complaints and opened his own practice in Pattaya.

I recently over a long weekend had to visit Pat Int as all other Retinal Drs in other hospitals were on leave and the Dr on duty barely looked at my eye - you get to know after a while how they look and he said I needed immediate laser which was later confirmed by both my above Dr was unnecessary. At the time I called Dr Pipat who was upcountry who spoke to this Dr and as Dr Pipat could not examine my eye suggested that I be guided by what this Dr wanted to do.

I would recomend calling Queen Sirikat Hospital in Sathahip. They are cheap and always good and have most equipment.

Did you try Pattaya International? Phyathai in Sriracha? BP Hospital has some very good physicians.

Had one done at Phyathai in Sriracha. Quite reasonable, think it was around B1000.

Same here, it's no fun that's for sure, having had detached retinas - most people like myself don't take heed of the warning signs first time round and usually by then the damage is done

going for another check tomorrow on my better of the 2 eyes.

Make an appt with Dr Roy at Rutnin.

He never said why he wanted a check up. If detached retina, I had 2 different symptoms, first eye, had part of my vision, go black, next time, vision just went blurry.

Diabetics need to regularly check retinas. It's the eyes and feet/legs that are at risk

I have probs with my eyes...live in pattaya and go to Rutnin only...Its easy to get there with the airport bus and then the train to the city from the airport...get off at Makassan station and a 10 minute walk from there...can also motorbike taxi from Makassan station to Rutnin...whole trip from Pattaya is about 2 hrs in total and its well worth it...Their level of care is great and costing is very fair

Had same happen to me and then my retina peeled off over the macula now I can't read with my left eye and as it was my first detachment I went with the doctor at BPH that had been examining me at the time and he screwed up the surgery and damaged my eye even more. Like I said in a previous post he was kicked out of BPH and Pat Intl for his reckless mistakes and now operates a private clinic in Pattaya targeting foreign tourists.

I just came back an hour ago from seeing Dr Roy at Rutnin he is Amercian trained and the best.

Seems the OP is just failing to get the point of this Rutnin place and is only looking for a cheap way. From what I have read here, if I had serious eye problems or concerns I would definitely make the trip to Bkk. Good info guys just in case.

The only time I would ever go to BPH for anything is to see a specialist who comes down to Pattaya once per week from Bkk.

Thanks to all posters recommending the Rutnin hospital. This was exactly the information I was looking for. I had detached retina a few years ago and been going to yearly check-ups ever since, in my home country. As I'm now staying in Pattaya most of this year it's good know of a professional place, just in case.

Don't you think money is a consideration?

Rutnin is not expensive compared to the others. I recently had 2 consecutive major surgeries both requiring a general with 5 nights in their best suite, my own private nurse, plus they have ward nurses as well and all cost 150k.

I think you are referring to Dr. Pipat - as I mentioned in a previous post I consider him to be as good as Dr Roy and what I do now if something is major I get them both to look and they then speak with each other and come back with a joint solution.

I saw Dr Pipat the other day in Bangkok as he has cancelled his BPH clinic (he hinted something to do with internal politics) and now only comes to BPH on Fridays if required for surgery.

as the OP i asked about retina eye tests. I did not say i had a problem. I don't have a problem - i simply wanted a test. That's eventually what i got at BPH at a fair price in my view.

.

If I had a problem then i could well use Rutnin in BKK (thanks for the recommendations)

I do wish TV posters would read a post properly and not make assumptions it's always about money (Mr/Ms Gone - post #21!)?
