Yes, I have an international drivers license based on my Thai drivers license. Sorry I don’t remember all the details but it was a painless process done at the same place one gets a normal license.

My experience and i have a few international driving licences is the local office will not do it and i have been sent to Chon Buri transport office every year. although its less than a year sine i last did it, i think its couple of pictures, your thai licence and would imagine copy passports etc and again i think immigration proof af address. Building number 4 as you go in from the dual carriagway its the builing to the left, entrance to the bulding is near the exit from the centre. i have hired cars in the UK using to its accpeted. About 500 baht.

ps just read edwinclapham link and info doc wise is there. But Pattaya office will never do mine, always sent to main office in Chon Buri

That is a bit scarey. If they issue International Driver's License based on a Thai license. I am not saying that other countrie's drivers are any better than Thai's. I know many US driver's that got International Driver licenses. But well, I still think it is a bit scarey based on what I have observed over the last 8 years of the average Thai qualified driver in Thailand.

You have obviously never been to Kuwait.

My ex missus got one for car, 8 seater bus, small truck and she never even driven a car. She went with a bike licence and got a International one for the whole lot. Totally agree, the Thai requirements to pass a test fall well short of th UKs but a Thai can drive in the UK on International licence.

This same topic has been posted half a dozen times in the last month.

UTFSE and you'll find where to get one in Pattaya.

There is no such thing as an international driving license . However there is

an International Driving Permit - essentially a copy of driving information from your home country license - which may or may not be acceptable in

Thailand. For motorbike rental I never had an issue.

You can get LEGAL permits from Ko San road.(Mod take note)

Actually the one I got here in the USA was from AAA. It is basically just a certification that you have a valid US driver's license. And as you say, I did get it for just the reason you mention, to rent a scooter of jetski or anything like that. In this day and age, the USA is very anal about having and needing and using our Driver's licenses for formal ID. So I don't let my USA state driver;s license out of my hands. It is a very important item here in the USA.
