Lazy Wife

I am looking for advice.

I don't speak much Thai actually only about 100 words so I am dependant on my wife to help me start a business but she doesn't because I know she thinks its easier for me to go back to the UK to work for three months a year, but I want to work here. (she doesn't need me for money because earns her own).

I have explained to her that no work here no marriage.

Apparently she still wants to be married to me so how do I get her to make the effort.

Is there anyone else in the same position.

From the wife's prospective: "My husband is so lazy. I want him to start up a business here in Thailand so that he won't have to go back to the UK to work for 3 months a year, but he won't bother to learn Thai!" :D

Perhaps she's busy with her job too. Like you said she's making money at the moment, perhaps she's not prepared to take on more work at the moment, and doesn't want to give up her job. :o

pal 78,

You mention that you can speak about 100 words of Thai only. You also mention that your wife says your too lazy to learn Thai.

Are you trying to start a business which you hope will attract Thai or foreign customers?

If you want Thai customers then surely you should be making an effort, both for better communication with your wife and with your customers.

Are you well aware of Thai buying habits? Have you made a details business plan, including accurate calculations of top line and bottom line margins, cashflow, etc?

Are you sure that your business is selling a product or service which can attract enough market share to make a living? Please don't fall into the well worn trap of thinking that starting a business in Thailand (or any country) is easy and you can make good profits in a quick time (unless you have a monopoly situation).

Remember that Thais will almost always avoid direct discussion / comment. Is your wife trying to give you a subtle message that 'it ain't gonna work!.'

Are you intimately aware of workplace expectations of Thai employees (if you have employees)? Are you aware that workplace behaviours of Thais is not the same as you would expect in a farang country - and the behaviors won't change (no negative or disrespect intended).

Food for thought.

Good luck

Alanw

What sort of a business are you trying to start, my lawyer set all that stuff up for me including WP for about 55k baht.

Just Amazing how my computer consultancy can sell alcohol and cigarettes....

Then the rest is up to you, but you should use a lawyer, after all advice is only worth what you pay for it

No, not me... I was just trying to be funny, that's all. Sorry if I confused you.

richard bampton was looking for advice on the business. His wife didn't say that. Like I said it was supposed to come across as being funny, but i guess it didn't work out as planned and I'm sorry about that! :o
