It seems now that there are a few new options for internet in the CM area. I just hooked up with TOT's new 'wi-net' that comes with an 18 mtr tower and a small mesh dish measuring approx 10 inches by 14 inches and it picks up a signal 7 kilometers away in Sansai. After a month, with superfast speeds to start, it has slowed down to my old ADSL [wired] internet with ups and downs during peak hrs. I had the wife call them and they now tell me that a new tower is under construction on Doi Saket that is an even newer technology and promises faster and more steady speeds......she didn't ask the name of it.

Just wondering if others are on this system and how it's working

and also wonder what it actually is......they tell me [in Thaiginglish] that it is a form of wi-fi, but I didn't realize that wi-fi had a range of 10+ kilometers.

How stable is this internet, does the connection drop often? I just can't imagine wireless connection from 10km+ away being too solid, but I've heard a few people talking about and recommending this.

Also what's the pricing like?

WiFi runs on 2.4GHz (and more recently 5.8GHz). The technology has been around for a long time. In the past I have installed 50Km wireless links on 2.4GHz technology.

WiFi is only limited distance, because of the limited radio and antenna setup. With a stronger radio and a directional antenna is it easy to go further.

The "small mesh dish" is actually a highly directional antenna, which extends the range very significantly.

Like most new internet offerings, mine started off flying like a jet.....maybe 3+ times as fast as my old copper wire ADSL.

DL speeds up to 5mbps and UP speeds at .6+ mbps and steady, but after 2 weeks, it dropped back to the old speeds.

I signed up for their lowest price option .....7m DL and .512 UP at 590thb/mo. Not a bad deal if I actually got what they promised. TOT says that their new tower on Doi Saket will be newer technology and faster speeds.

Their fastest option is 10m DL and 1m UP for 890thb/mo and I think that I'll go for that when the new tower is operational in 2 weeks.

I was a long time subscriber of their service and instalation/ router and tuning was free.....all I had to pay for was the unsightly 18 mtr steel pipe tower. New customers will pay more for sure.

Hopefully it won't go the way most communications go here in LOS, where they over sell their capacity to serve their existing customers.

Wonder if the other servers are offering anything similar?? 3BB or True??

Any reports??

18 meter high steel pipe tower?

How much did that cost?

And where are you located in relation to Sansai?

would like to know the same...

Sorry, I forgot to mention cost of the steel pipe and guy wires= 3,000thb.

my location in regards to the Sansai antanae: dish is pointed in a south west direction. I watched the technician tune the dish, trying two locations....Sansai and an antanae on a small doi located north of Sankapheng, both at approx 7 k from my site. Doi Saket will be about the same, 7k.

My neighbor.......200mtrs away gets his signal from the Sankapheng tower.

We have a lot of tall trees that effect the signal strength......needs to be line of site for strongest signal and hopefully the Doi Saket tower will be high enough and less trees to effect signal.

May be it is WiMax.

TOT calls it 'WiNet'.....but that is just their trade name of it as I googled 'winet and found nothing for that name.

Still wondering of any of the other servers, 3bb and true are using similar systems/technology??

What's the ping like? E.g.:

ping dslreports.com

310ms

Is it your question or you only suggest OP to check speed test/ping?

How's it been doing? Do you have a tel # for the TOT in that area we could call for the latest info? I heard that the CAT CDMA modem I have been using is about to go TU so need to look for alternatives, especially one that also works in the Phuket area like the CAT did.

Hi CH...It's been mostly up and down as most things are here in LOS. At the suggestion of the TOT office, I went for the lowest priced program [4m @ 499/mo] and started off getting what I paid for, but it slowed down to unacceptable. I then upped my package to their highest [10m @ 899/mo] and it's been flying....sometimes over 10m. I'm a happy guy now.

Best if you go down to the Sansai office and speak directly and I think yes, you might need a TOT number to start. That only adds 100thb/mo on your bill, but in your location, you will probably have some additional installation costs. I got the discount because I had been a customer of TOT for over a year.

Sorry I missed you this last weekend, but busy........

ps....my latest ping was 54ms

I think you hit the nail right on the head when you mentioned oversell.

Until Chiang Mai gets more than one quality server we will always have slow connections. A server upgrades to a good speed and then every one goes to it and the speed slows down. Then another upgrades and the same thing happens. Over and over again.

I went to the TOT office to complain about the service, waste of time really,

but they upgraded me from 7gb to 10 gb for the same cost, the first day it

was quiet good, and its been downhill from there, it even goes off now when

it rains,!! and I thought only True tv did that.

So dont know where to go now to get decent service, at least enough to

stream tv.

Be happy it didnt rain for weeks now.

No kidding, We also have TOT and got an upgrade from 2 to 4 mbps. (We live quite outside the city)

That's an improvement!

We had many problems with the electricity when a thunder rain came over with fast speed and of course no internet when the power fell out.

The government hough the trees, problem solved but next year they will have grown again.
