BANGKOK: -- The Interior Ministry yesterday agreed in principle on flood payments of Bt10,000 to each floodaffected Bangkok resident, at the request of Democrat Party MPs who yesterday had a special meeting with ministry and disaster mitigation officials.

The payment amount has been agreed on unofficially by Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, in the wake of roadblocking protests by residents over the various compensation schemes after the flooding last year.

Democrat MP Korn Chatikavanich, who led the Democrat team, also asked the ministry to consider paying an extra amount on top of the blanket Bt10,000 - like floodhit people in the provinces had received - for damage done to cooking utensils and cooking utensils.

A large number of flood victims, especially those based in Bangkok’s Don Muang district, had demanded a blanket Bt20,000, but Yongyuth said the Bt10,000 pay was more likely possible. He said a fiveday registration would be designated for any flood victim missing an earlier deadline.

Both Yougyuth, as a deputy Pheu Thai leader, and the Democrats met reportedly in a friendly manner and they addressed each other brother - a infrequent atmosphere given bitter rivalry between the coalition and opposition leaders.

Good deal

Lose your house and all your possessions and get 10000 in return

Nothing beats incompetence

I hope the people rise up and sue the people who mismanaged this

Thai forget easily and didn't protest enough so they get as little money as they deserve for accepting anything that happens.

By the looks of the photo, I imagine each person there spends more than 10 000 baht per weekend on good wine alone!

Lose your possessions, lose members of your family, but hey a weekends wine ration should cover it!

A long journey starts with a first small step. Bravo!
