Shoppers hurt in Tesco ceiling collapse

AYUTTHAYA: -- A section of the ceiling at a Tesco Lotus outlet in Ayutthaya collapsed yesterday, injuring many shoppers, one of them seriously.

The 20metre section of ceiling was in front of a sukiyaki eatery. An initial inspection found that the collapse occurred when a large piece of an airconditioning vent broke free from the fixture holding it in place, causing it to rest on the section of ceiling, which gave way.

One person was sent to hospital and many others sustained minor injuries. The area has been declared off limits while inspections continue. Legal action might be taken in the case, a local politician said.

We were in Tesco Lotus Hangdong a couple of years ago when the sewer drain from the toilets upstairs broke and came through the ceiling. Man what a mess and the stench was unreal so we got out quickly and went home.

Then in Big C about 6 months ago the ceiling in the food hall (actually the entire roof above) caved in and was patched up with blue tarp for several days. Could have been lightning but I suspect the typical Thai standard band-aid engineering and construction would be more likely.

Amazing Thailand,... if it ever changes it would be a "Miracle" ;-)

I'd be looking at the airconditioning contractor before that.

Amazing Thailand maybe, but that could happen anywhere in the world.. In France not long ago a ceiling colapsed the difference it was a concrete one of 1700 tons. If one reads the news headlines it would be easy to find also the Amazing US Amazing UK.... For it is an Amazing Earth in fact :-)

If I could find that Bloody British guy that stole your girlfried ( and many other girlfriends of other anti British posters) I would give him a good kicking in the hope that all your hurt pride would be repaired. He is responsible for so much and just because he is better looking, has a superior personality and much more money and has a big Dick instead of being one!

I think that the designers must have gotten their plans from American Designers.

Lots of thing happen because of storms. Not really the same thing as the OP.

I am so glad to be in Thailand. which on it's worst day is so much better than the States where it's major dog eat dog. Thai construction is very shoddy most construction uses rebar steel at less than 10% of the minimum BS standard.

They don't even know how to mix mortar correctly 1:2 cement to sand - just wastes cement and will be full of micro cracks.

Lucky it was only the ceiling. In Sydney Australia last week an entire carpark slab collapsed in a major shopping mall ... I blame "Amazing Thailand" ... as it seems to be the norm on this forum.

Tesco Lotus still safer than going to a movie or to school some in other countries.

Why? Did they build it? Don't think so. So why not go direct to the building inspector who ticked it off as being safe. Maybe because they never even got off there ass to look at it.

Actually, the ceiling collapse, judging from the photograph was not in Tesco-Lotus, but outside it. Tesco-Lotus just happens to be the biggest retailer in the Ayutthaya Park shopping centre. The newspaper article is misleading.

It's all the fault of the "large piece of an airconditioning vent" than. This particular vent must have been real nasty as normal vents are very light and don't cause ceiling collapses. Or could that had anything to do with the idiots who installed the ceiling incorrectly? Or perhaps with a greedy builder who hired unskilled staff to carry out sub-standard work as this was maximizing his profits? And the concern for public safety was very last on his agenda. But of course this is just my vicious speculation and it's far "nicer" to blame it on a run-away vent.

Right, even though the likelihood of a 'Thai Worker' for a 'Thai Air Conditioning Company',

subcontracting to a 'Thai Construction Company', didn't tighten on one nut on a support rod,

and that eventually it vibrated off, and the duct landed on the ceiling, installed by a

'Thai Interior Decoration Company'.

Or that TESCO /LOTUS Thailand is a Thai Company,

51% owned by Thailand Nationals.

But of course we ALL know British Companies check

every single nut and bolt their contractors use, personally, themselves,

so they MUST be at fault.

Well let's hope the injured recover completely and get adequate compensation,

without politicians sticking their snouts in and trying for a slice of the pie.

Thai construction. This is a picture of what I presume to be an interior wall in the new 26 story condo going up across from me! Check the alignment of the cinder blocks in the upper left!

Hope the rest of the building is a bit better or I had better move!

Tesco are no doubt a tenant with a lease and the aircon and ceiling is most likely not their responsibility to maintain. I would expect Tesco (and injured shoppers) will be suing the landlord. Particularly if the problem was previously brought to the attention of the landlord who did SFA about it ....

Talk about falling prices!
