Southern Philippine rebels clash and kill 12 soldiers < br />

ZAMBOANGA CITY, PHILIPPINES (BNO NEWS) -- At least twelve soldiers and five rebels were confirmed dead after clashes broke out in southern Philippines, officials said Thursday.

Fighting broke out at around 7:30 a.m. local time between government troops and suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group in Sumisip, located in the island province of Basilan, which is within the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Joint Special Operations Task Force Basilan chief Colonel Ramon Yogyog confirmed the clashes, saying troops were carrying out security operations against rebels who have been harassing plantation workers of the Tumahubong Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Integrated Development Cooperative Inc., Inquirer News reported. Eight soldiers and four rebels were killed.

Government troops were then ambushed in the Upper Cabengbeng village in Sumisip at around 1:30 p.m. local time, where another four soldiers were killed. In addition to all the casualties, at least two security members were also injured.
