Tattoo shop on the top floor of Kad Suan Keaw. Can't remember the name, but it might be called Shadow Tattoo. Anyway, take the escalator up to the top floor as if you were going to the cinema. Once you get to the top of the escalator the tattoo shop will be off to your right. Been there three times, always very good service. Almost all of my Thai friends go there to get ink.

Had a friend come up from Bangkok to get a tattoo from this shop. Owner was written up in a number of tattoo magazines. The guy worked on my friend for about 4 hours a day for 2 days. Did an amazing job. This was about 4 1/2 years ago. I'm assuming it's the same place, same guy...don't know for sure.

I can see why someone who likes tattoos would wanna get another one… but sometimes I think it's kinda' strange for people to get tattoos in Thailand. It almost seems like some people, who wouldn't normally get a tattoo, decide that Thailand is the place to get it. It's kind of like decided to experiment with pot in Thailand. It's not a part of the main culture (though, of course, there is a sub-culture).

Sometimes it seems like people are trying to "go native" by doing things that the Thais don't do themselves: like go around without a shirt on; put their feet up on the table; wear fisherman's pants and walk down the street in downtown; get a tattoo; become a vegetarian; tan their skin; go into a temple in a tank top and shorts…

Thais are kinda' conservative.

Just an observation. I might get a tattoo here myself one day, but not because I want to go native. Also realize the OP isn't one of those types.

^^^^^^, agree with everything you say, for many of these gap year student new age hippy types its part of their rite of passage, same as full moon parties on the islands.

You forgot to mention the filthy smelly dreadlocks.

However I digress, for many tattooed people the attraction of Thailand is quite simple, the price.

Dont know where you are from, however in the UK and Australia the prices per hour are prohibitive for many.

Tattoos are bloody dirty so how can a place specialising in the things be clean?

When I need ink I go to WH Smith or any other reputable stationers (B2S in Kad Suan Kaew springs to mind) and make a capital purchase! As for drawing on yourself, Mai ow! No thanks! My son went through a phase of drawing on him self when he was stupid. Thank buddha he is no longer stupid or three years old!

As for the rest of you. Do you really want to encourage more tattooed oaths to come to Chiang Mai and ruin the place for the rest of us expats that actually live here? :wai:
