PULI ALAM, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden truck Tuesday near a coalition base in eastern Afghanistan, killing three Afghan civilians and injuring a number of coalition service members, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The attack happened when an insurgent drove his truck up to the gate of a coalition base in Puli Alam, the capital of Logar province in eastern Afghanistan. The attacker detonated the explosives, which were hidden under construction materials, when a guard at the gate became suspicious.

A spokesperson for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said three Afghan civilians were killed while around a dozen people were injured, including Afghan civilians and an unknown number of ISAF service members. They were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

Logar provincial governor Mohammad Tahir Sabari said he was "totally saddened" by Tuesday's attack, which happened during the holy month of Ramadan. He condemned with the strongest terms what he described as a "tragic act", offering his prayers and sympathies for the families of the victims.

The attack on the coalition base came only hours after an improvised explosive device (IED) struck a civilian minibus as it drove over a bridge on the main road in Khaldari, a village located in the Paghman district of Kabul province, also in eastern Afghanistan. The bombing, apparently intended for an Afghan National Army (ANA) vehicle which was driving behind the minibus, killed eight civilians and injured five others.
