poanoi
I think i use them only as an ironic gesture, but now the vai smilie isnt here any longer so guess that's the end of smilies for me Edited August 8, 2012 by poanoi
Jimi007
I use them occasionally, but not that often. I can usually say what I mean to say without emoticons. A few probably save me some suspension time from the forum...

Popular Post BookMan
Yeah I use them. The use of the smiley can often mean the post is not interpreted as a flame or personal insult to another poster Can be hard to convey some emotions, sarcasm, lightheardeness, anger if u choose, over a keyboard.

Yes I invariably use this is my posts as a way to show there's no malice intended whatsoever.
canuckamuck
Yes, much better than saying "this is meant as a joke by the way". However I use them sparingly.
cooked
Maybe I don't use them because I try (not always successfully) to keep emotions out of posts to complete strangers. Another reason is that I think that they are silly, especially posts that have more emoticons than words. Go on now, I expect some really refreshing posts consisting entirely of emoticons.
