Red-Shirt Leader Weng Calls For Recognition Of I.C.C. Jurisdiction

Just caught up in the excitement of the moment?

Honest mistake?

Forgot his hypocratic oath?

Wise after the event?

With hindsight, your honour.....

Thai doctors do not take or are subject to the Hippocratic Oath. An oath of hypocracy is something different. This medical doctor is apparently an OAF.

My apologies to Hippocrates for the spelling. I had assumed that was something to do with transporting horses.

Dont forget that the Redshirts raided 2 hospitals, no one has apologised for the first. Or any other breach of international humanitarian law.................

10th April 2010: Red Shirt protestors stormed Thailand Television station. On the same day, the government clashed with the Red Shirt Protestors. Independent investigations and witnesses ensured there are military trained and heavily armed men within the Red Shirt Protestors. This caused casualties of both civilians and military officials. See

(Breach of item 1 and 4 as listed above). During this event, Red Shirt Protestors attacked a truck carrying wounded soldiers, proven as a breach of international humanitarian law. See http://www.youtube.c...?v=LXMmQReCKVg. Later that night, the Red Shirt protestors raided Hua Chiew Hospital and Wachira Hospital in Bangkok attempting to take corpses of Red Shirt Protestors for political rally without relatives permission, an action which also obstructed legal investigations of the case.......

Maybe Weng made these ICC comments because:

1. Distract attention from the budget debate

2. Keep the Reds warm in case they are needed on short notice

3. Part of their propaganda: Who killed their peaceful protestors

BTW have you noticed that:

1. This government is NOT interested to find out who killed their officials.

2. The UDD/PT leaders have NEVER blamed the so called Men In Black for any of the killings. They only blame the army.

As a UDD leader, don't you think he is able to speak for more than just himself?

69048.jpg

Fellow Red Shirt Leader and current Pheu Thai Party MP Payap (same titles as Weng), who led the Red Shirt raid on Chulalongkorn Hospital and never apologized speaks volumes for the so-called "movement." ermm.gif

.

OMG, Payap is an MP?! .. So that's his reward? Immunity? UNBELIEVABLE!

The poster before you would seem to imply that it is not enough for the UDD to issue an apology for the hospital incident as was done, but that other UDD members need to apologize or else it some how doesn't "count".

I don't think anyone is expecting all Red Shirts to apologize for it, more like it'd be nice to hear some remorse from the Red Shirt Leader that directly led the raid.

In lieu of that, some condemnation of his actions by other Red Shirt Leaders would be good, but even better if they sought some credibility would be for his removal from the Red Shirts.

None of that occurred. Instead, what did occur was the opposite and he was rewarded with a seat in Parliament and the immunity that comes with it.

As several cogent contributors have already pointed, a country cannot cherry pick ICC prosecutions on demand. One either accepts the jurisdiction of the ICC or one doesn't. And once has become a signatory, anyone is fair game, including heads of state past or present , generals, and all the other usual suspects - as President Bashir of Sudan and former President Taylor of Liberia have recently discovered.

This is why, incidentally , the United States has refused to become a signatory.

Is Thailand a signatory to the ICC?

Thailand is one of 32 states that have signed the ICC agreement BUT not ratified the treaty.

Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties[/url], a state that has signed but not ratified a treaty is obliged to refrain from "acts which would defeat the object and purpose" of the treaty, however, these obligations do not continue if the state makes clear that it does not intend to become a party to the treaty.[19] As such, three states which have unsigned the Rome Statute (Israel, Sudan, and the United States of America) and have indicated that they no longer intend to become states parties, have no legal obligations arising from their signature of the Statute.]

Two of the three countries that refuse to become state parties are interesting!

Thailand

Former Senator Kraisak Choonhavan called in November 2006 for Thailand to ratify the Rome Statute and to accept retrospective jurisdiction, so that former premier Thaksin Shinawatra could be investigated for crimes against humanity connected to 2,500 alleged extrajudicial killings carried out in 2003 against suspected drug dealers.[25]
